Dining Room Chairs With a Vintage Grain Sack Look

It's been a while since I first posted about the 6 dining room chairs that came to live with me from an ad on craigslist - they came along with two turkeys on sale from the grocery store for Thanksgiving - that we ate.

You know how you are so excited to finish a project that you hurry up to work on it and then you love the whole process so much you stretch it out for a year because you wanna extend the process of the whole mess since you are having so much fun and you don't want it to end?

Me either.

But Thanksgiving 2013 arrived, two more turkeys were purchased and eaten, and the chairs were completed.

And now 2 months later, January 2014, their debut......

My dining room chairs were anything but a fun process for me.

Remember {here} I said I'd rather gnaw off my arms then ever paint and wax chairs again?

In June's installment of the never ending dining room redo, I gave a glimpse of the graphics for the chair backs and the 600 tacks that first had to come out, then had to be straightened and put back in.

100 tacks per chair.

Yeah, Brawn's favorite part.

NOT.

But I liked the patina on the tacks, and I'm cheap so wanted to reuse them.

{Here} I ruined a brand new Egyptian cotton pillow case working on the chair backs, while simultaneously lifting the pattern and wax from my dining room table.

I also thought I would "help" and I hammered holes in my Corian counter top.  I.D.I.O.T.

But I carried on, working into the night hand striping and sanding lines to mimic grain sacks....

Is that stripping or striping?  I made lines.  I'm too tired to look up the definitions.

I was so proud I lined up all six of the drop cloth backs before they were sanded......

I used the CitraSolv method from The Graphics Fairy on the chair backs to transfer the design......

I don't think I have mentioned how much I love them.  I love them.

I love them.  I. LOVE. THEM!!

I love the fronts, I love the backs, and I love them so much I don't even care this picture sucks.....

The drop cloth fabric worked perfect.  We sprayed each of them with some 3M fabric protector, in case anyone with red velvet fingers touches them it will clean easier.  (One of my favorite posts by the way, if you haven't read it and need a laugh take a gander).

Next to the ROOM # I stamped in the birth dates of each of my six offspring.......

Old Albert surely never thought his memory would live on and be honored on the backs of our chairs, but the old mill sack look is very fitting for the farmer that he was.

Some day you will see the whole room.  This week in Minnesota with the cold temperatures, Helll was close to freezing over, but since that didn't happen neither did a dining room reveal.

The chairs are happily surrounding the table Brawn made, that he now needs to revamp so the chairs don't hit the legs.

Did I mention I love them?  I do I do.

I think they are worth every bit of elbow grease I used.... and the blog posts I milked for a year!

  1. beautiful! You should be very proud of yourself for hanging in there Bliss! Love that you put the birth dates on the graphic. I have never been able to get an image to transfer with citrasolv. I can't get a copy with the right toner. :(

  2. OMG YOU FINISHED YOUR CHAIRS!!!!!!! Love, Love, LOVE the idea with the birth dates on the backs...and the patina on the tacks (and no, I haven't made "becoming a rapper" part of my 2014 resolution so let's just leave it there, shall we?!) Seriously...those chairs are gorgeous...I have 6 to redo...want to come to my house? xo

  3. And so you should love them, they are A-MAZ-ING.
For some reason I thought the graphic was going on the front (sorry if I wasn't paying attention), but the finished result works way better. I love the grain sack fronts and can't wait to see the whole dining room.
Do your offspring like to sit on their own chairs ?

  51. I want to celebrate along with you that they are finally finished!!! And I am feeling sorry for myself that I am so late to the party to say congratulations. Like you gave birth to another kid, and me, your friend called a week later to say by the way, congratulations ;( I love them, I really LOVE them!! I think you should mention how much your really love Braun too. He does the heavy lifting around here, except for the part of giving birth. That tops any heavy lifting and table alterations, tack removing, etc. That's all I got.
