DIY Spindle Mattress

What's that you say, a DIY mattress?

Isn't DIY the initialism for "do it yourself"?

So you want to know if there is such a thing as a DIY mattress, what is it, and why?

Well let the wise old owl just tell you.....

To folks who DIY, no project scares us.

Give us basic instructions, don't over complicate things, and we are good to go.

Like most people however my mattress purchasing has been restricted to walking in to a store, laying down on multiple mattresses, forking over the big bucks, and awaiting delivery.

I never really knew what was inside my mattress even when viewing those cut away sections that show me all these supposed amazing layers I was getting for my money.

And I never really liked a salesperson following my husband and I around as we awkwardly plopped down on various beds pretending we are back sleepers, to find the best fit.

So when the offer to review a DIY natural latex mattress from the Spindle Mattress Company was presented to me, I wasn't worried in the least about assembling the components from the comfort of my own bedroom.

In fact, I think my thought was "bring it on".

We've wore out two styles of water beds and a Select Comfort air bed.

Take that however you want -  but we needed a new mattress, and Spindle is made right here in the U.S.A.

Maybe we didn't wear out the water beds, maybe they just weren't cool anymore.  Free flow or baffled, other than worrying the heater was going to malfunction and electrocute me as I slept, they provided a decent nights rest.

Select comfort?  Well we jumped on that bandwagon 20 years ago, and the prices have sure increased, I think now they come with wheels and a steering column because they cost more than my teenagers first car.

We were ready for a change and had been looking in stores but I hadn't realized that buying a mattress these days required one to apply rocket science - something I'm not capable of doing - so we always left the store empty handed and more confused than when we came in.

Spindle Mattress took away both the confusion and the need for rocket science.

All that was required to get started was a willing 7 year old with scissors.

The components to the mattress arrived in four boxes, and one was labeled open first.  Like I said, as DIY'ers we prefer simple, to-the-point directions, and it doesn't get easier than "open first"!

We passed instructions along to the 7 year old assistant for the first task - remove all bedding and make a pile.

By the time we were done with packaging, bedding and previous air bed parts we had a big messy pile.

There are choices for firmness and Spindle Mattress works with you to configure your bed.

We have a king size bed and had a configuration option other size beds don't have..... two twin size mattresses.

Of course we didn't have to configure it this way, but I made the executive decision that I wanted to purchase an adjustable base bed frame, and I wanted to be able to adjust my side separate from the guy who didn't snore when I married him.  (Be warned young women - no one told me snoring was something men could acquire).

The natural latex is all rolled up firmly, and there is no right side or wrong side, it can be put in the cotton cover holes up or holes down.

There are three layers with different firmness.

We each wanted our side in the medium range, so the top two layers are medium.

Because we were configuring our mattress to fit on an adjustable base, they are also extra long twin size, bonus for a husband who is 6'2".

The organic cotton cover may not look like the right size at first, and we wondered how that foam was going to fit inside there, but it does, and the cover plumps up to a silky soft quilted plush top, just as awesome as anything we've ever touched at the store.

The foam tucks into the cover snug and fits the same as the more expensive brand from the store.

When done there is no way to tell this bed wasn't assembled by people trained to do this.  Are people trained to do that?

Between opening and inserting each layer we had several gawkers who had to lay down to test out each new layer.

After the third layer goes in you think you won't be able to zip the cover shut, but it smoothly closes up for a well made fit.

Completing an unusual DIY of putting a bed together leads me to say I really believe anyone can do this.

There was nothing difficult in the least, so if you are one of those people thinking you want one of those fancy natural latex beds but don't want to pay the fancy price, do not fear going the DIY route with Spindle.

The only change for us was that while our current platform is tall the new mattress made it taller - and I am short, so I had to steal the step stool that a certain 4 year old uses to reach the sink.

The stool is only temporary till we make that move to the adjustable base.  I'm thinking I'll get my side equipped with the eject option, to catapult me up each day.

Once the bed was put together, and my awesome linens from Perfect Linens were put back on, everyone was ready for some R&R.

We've been sleeping on the new Spindle Mattress for a month now.  I wanted to actually use it before I did the review.

So I can now report that the new mattress is giving us a good nights sleep, and the usual snoring has happily continued.

At least happily for one of the two people who sleep here.

  1. Thanks for the fun read! That sounds like a great product and the packaging/diy assembly part would be the icing on the cake of a comfy mattress for those of us in builder sub-division newer homes (and probably many older homes as well) because the architects surely didn't consider moving mattresses up and down stairs as part of their design. How great it would be to carry four boxes upstairs instead of the scratched walls, bending and contortions required for regular mattresses. I have heard that a higher mattress usually proves most challenging for the family dog ;) Sleep well! Love the look and colours of your bedroom!

Just wheat I'm looking for. My mattress has not been turned in too many years because it's too heavy to handle in the limited space available. How often o they recommend turning? If they do.And I'm looking for a smaller roost, but don't' want to move the old mattress and could start out fresh with this one.

Going to look for Spindle website.......

btw, snoring can be sign of sleep apnea. Which can cause some risk of brain damage and other unpleasant ailments. You might want your honey to have a sleep study...Or maybe he needs a little nasal surgery to help YOU sleep better......
    Happy dreams, sweetheart.......

    1. Fortunately Mr. Bliss doesn't snore all night long. I'd have to off him if he did! We are sleeping good on the Spindle Mattress and it was really easy to set up.

  4. This looks awesome...a lot better than setting up big, heavy mattresses. Their website looks great, too.
Love the cute photos of your little helpers...

  5. I think I love the idea of being catapulted out of bed...not me, of course. The snoring beasts next to me, Magoo and Jack. I tried to sneak out and go sleep in the guest room last night but Jack followed...and then Sophie and Bruce. I'm a tired mama.
Looka like a great mattress, B. Keep us posted on how you like it after more time passes. I'll be in the market for a new mattress soon. Your little helpers sure are cute.

  9. How cool! I've only heard of this mattress but didn't know much about it. Your little helpers were awfully cute! Glad to hear that this mattress worked out. It would've been so disappointing if it didn't after all that work to put it together. It's good to know that it wasn't too difficult too.

  11. We splurged and bought the adjustable/vibrating base last January and really love it! My husband is a terrible snorer also and it is like a miracle - he doesn't snore anymore! Raising the head really helps when you have a head cold also, or sinus. I wish we had the king size so we could have separate controls, as I prefer the head and foot raised even higher than he does. But we have a queen, as we already had an Amish made hickory log bed that I didn't want to part with. I love the "zero gravity" position! And the vibration is so relaxing! We are so spoiled - hate to sleep away from home anymore.

  12. When we moved, we had to purchase a ladder just so that we could hoist the queen sized box frame out the 2nd story window because we it wouldn't fit down the stairway. Made me think there's got to be a better way, and it looks like Spindle Mattress is all over that. Would love an update in the future on this as one of these days we'll be in the market for a new mattress.

  14. Adjustable beds, after all, specifically offer the sort of comfort that some of us might particularly be in need of, especially those who are suffering from certain health conditions and who require special sleeping comforts that include an elevation for the head and feet. If you find yourself tossing and turning all night long on a standard flat mattress, and you find the slightly inclined position to be comfortable, an adjustable bed may be a good choice. memory foam hq
