Rustic and Calm Guest Bathroom

For those of you in sunny early spring locations, I remember well what that means.

In warm Southern California it meant beach weather would soon be heating up and a wardrobe change will take place away from fashionable sweaters that we didn't really need to wear due to cold weather anyway.

But in the Midwest the arrival of spring means different things.

First it means you can't trust Mother Nature just yet.

She might have an April Fools prank by dusting you with some snow or she could dump a foot of it on you.

It means you can't put your sweaters away quite yet because one day it might be 29 degrees and the next 65, so you keep two wardrobes ready just in case.

One thing we can count on is that there will have been more than one or two days with a temperature above freezing so everything will thaw.

Everything.

About now some blogs are able to show you their pretty spring flowers sitting on their welcoming front porch.

But my reality in Minnesota, is that outside we're disposing of all the things that were hiding under the snow all winter.

What I'm trying to say here delicately is.... well.... yeah, my glamorous life on the first 60 degree day consists of picking up dog doo.

Are you asking yourself what this all has to do with #1 son's guest bathroom?

Nothing other than I'm thankful I have photos of his new house to show you or I'd have to document the shoveling of dog stuff in the barren, flowerless yard, that's full of still leafless trees.... and mounds of smelly brown mush.

Please don't thank me for that visual.

I really like his guest bathroom much more than dog stuff, so here it is.

#1 son is a lot like me, probably in his more unflattering traits.

Fortunately he is also a lot like his father in the admirable ones.

He was blessed with many creative and artistic talents, and he's able to use them finishing his house.

I think he wakes up and decides today I'm gonna build a __________, and then he proceeds to build it, just like his dad.

Such was the day he stopped in to use a few tools, and he left a short time later with a rustic little cabinet for his guest bathroom made from scrap wood.

It would be much easier to shop at the building supply store and pick out a typical pedestal sink, but he'd rather build an original that none of his friends have and use his own two hands to make it.

That last line is probably a combination of traits from both his mom and dad.

He took a regular galvanized tub, and aged it so it didn't look shiny new, then plumbed it.

What his dad and I like is that he thinks out of the box a bit, which also makes having interesting things cost effective.

In our family if you can DIY, you do.

And so he did.

  2. Way cool. And I get ya with the Midwest weather. Ours has been all over the place and poor Eddie about got blown over by the 40-mph winds we had the other day. That whole outhouse he's got there is pretty darn awesome.

  9. Now that is absolutely amazing. Your kids are so dang talented!! I did have the same rust question. Wondering if there is a way to treat the metal first? Pinning this now!

    1. I was just going to say it takes forever, but here is an official answer: "Galvanized metal does rust eventually, but it can take decades. Metal is galvanized by adding a thin layer of zinc to its surface. The zinc forms a barrier between atmospheric oxygen and the underlying iron or steel. This generally prevents rust". So, if it is going to happen it won't be for a while, and it's not out in the elements.

  10. What a cool bathroom! I love the huge washtub being used as a sink. It goes perfectly with the rustic wood vanity that he built as well.
