Painted Pond Fish

I get a lot of my ideas from fellow bloggers.

You know how someone can look at something and see it in a new light, update it, and the next thing you know you're looking at something similar that you own and thinking, hey I can do that!

That was the case with this old scaly chipping fish decoration that I had setting next to our pond for ten years, and I'm going to show you how easy it is to update something with a fresh coat of paint.

I got the idea from Christy at Our Southern Home, a fellow team member with me at Thrift Store Decor.

Last month Christy updated a similar looking fish by just changing the color, and my similar fishy was begging me for a new look too.

When I saw her vase holding fish, I thought what the heck why not update my old fish - a new coat of paint certainly wouldn't hurt his looks any!

The little fella got two coats of Fusion Mineral Paint in the Michael Penney line called Pebble.  It's a nice soft gray.

After he was dry I lightly sanded to distress just a bit.

Only lightly because I wanted to get the project off the table, I actually think I would like a bit more aging around his gills, he's ten years old after all.

Maybe being out in the elements will naturally age him like it has me.  My gills aren't what they used to be.

I put him back out among the hostas and rocks at the edge of the patio pond and he looks much cleaner and less like a piece of junk sitting there.  In fact his before color just blended in with the rocks, now he is noticeable.

Doesn't he look happy in his new paint?

  1. Looking good! I have a garage full of critters that need an update. My concrete pig bench is about to get a fresh paint job, too.
