Watching Paint Dry

Today I needed to not sit and just read blogs - fun but not very productive.  So between reading I painted, and then watched the paint dry... in my jammies.  I've gotten used to chalk paint with it's fast dry time, and waiting for regular paint to dry seemed to take forever.  Being the impatient decorator I am - I'm quite sure I slapped the second coat on before #1 was dry.  I didn't mind a white door, but from the outside the white was boring.  I usually hang seasonal flower things from the little hook in the center to jazz it up.  The storm door is white, the side lites are white, the door just didn't stand out, it was just a wash of white.

Under the white is a nice solid wood door.  No way I was going to strip the door when we have perfectly good paint left over from another project.  The color wasn't as important to me as it just not being white and brass anymore, so I went for it.  A close to wood color.  I was thinking of trying a nice vibrant splash of color but I'm not very good at picking paint, and besides I didn't want to get out of my jammies to go buy any.

Before
After
I had to sand the brass hardware and fortunately we had some chrome spray paint, otherwise they would be black 'cause like I said I wasn't getting out of my jammies.  A Good Will tray from my shopping trip last week went on the hook.  It's big and heavy and I probably over paid for it, but I wanted it.  Two holes were drilled, some burlap as ribbon and it was done.  I also got the stairway basket below which is big and heavy and I wanted it too.  I forgot before photos - the basket was a light color with red and green bands woven on the top.  Brawn painted it when he painted the porch furniture, and the tray was exactly the same except now it has chalkboard paint in the center.  I am going to hang a number tag on the basket, but my day is over - I got dressed at about 5:00 when Brawn pulled in the driveway.

So far no one has used the basket for anything; stinky socks are still dropped right next to it as well as any books that need to go down the stairs.

The last thing I did today was buff the rocking chair I waxed a week ago, and I had painted it a week before that.  If you are keeping track, I was not in my jammies for the final project.   The buffing really really made the wax shine.  The chair was my mom's - not vintage, just a nice solid rocker for singing to my grand babies and it needed an update.  Some distressing makes it seem like it has been around longer than it has.

  2. I love that you didn't get dressed until Brawn came home. My kind of lady. I actually get more work done in my jammies than when I'm dressed. Love the door! Love the chair. Love the basket. Love the chalkboard tray. Just love it all!

  13. Love the darker color on the door. So rich looking! We have a stair basket, too. No one uses ours either. Sometimes we store the dog's toys in there.

  15. I've got that same shiny brass junk on my front door and never really thought about painting it. The new paint color and chrome jewelry really dress up your door. And I love the tray chalkboard!

Good thing I read this post. It reminded me to get a bag of food on the front proch for the Boy Scout food shelf collection. Gotta go dig around in my messy pantry!

  23. Your door looks amazing! We painted out plain white door as well. What a difference! I'm loving the color you chose. Funny thing is I used to have the same rocker, donated it after my daughter grew out of her rock-a-bye baby stage. I love what you did to give it new life! Nice to meet you, and I'm now following your lovely blog via linky.

PS I always put my second coat on before the first one dries and take a picture of it for the blog when it's still wet :)

PS - I know, I am a no-reply blogger and it is so embarrassing and awful. Please forgive me until I figure this out. *SIGHHHH*

  28. If I am at home, I change four times a day - dressing gown, dog-walking clothes, painting clothes, slouchy in-front-of-the-tv clothes. I think it's holding me back. I need to stay in jammies all day and get more stuff done !
Seriously - love the colour of the front door and the great little chalk board tray, and the chair and the basket - yeah, put a number on it.
Btw did you wax the door as well and do you use AS wax. I have a front door that desperately needs painting and I hadn't thought of AS before !

  33. Well I'd say you've got a real knack for picking out paint color, because all 3 turned out great! The door looks so rich, and that rocker is to die for. Good job!

  34. You've been very busy! Love the new color of your front door. We still have brass on ours and it needs to be changed. I like the idea of just spray painting it, but I wonder how it will hold up to the outside elements? It would be a lot cheaper than replacing it altogether. Oh well, who am I kidding? I still have a brass chandelier in the foyer and brass in my master bathroom. We would have to do alot of work to change all of it. It will probably just stay for now. I just recently replaced all of our brass light switch plates to plain white. My husband said, didn't we start out with white to begin with? I of course, said yessss. And your point is? Ha! Love how your rocker turned out too.

  37. I love the door. I think I have the same one. It came primed and we need to paint it. What color was your paint/brand and how did you change the brass on the window insert? I would love to do that. I bought paint valspar opera something it might be slightly lighter than yours. I hope not, yours looks fantastic.
