Months worth of collecting |
My mom was a gentle lady. I was a brat. One of my first posts was about her and the Christmas cactus she left me.
She kept her yardstick by the refrigerator. Was it just a convenient spot to store it or did she keep it there so when I came by she could quickly grab it and smack me on my butt?
I will never know. A mark was never left on my azzz and I don't remember ever crying, but I knew I was being a serious brat if the yardstick came out.
I picked up this little table at an estate sale in July for $10 bucks.
I didn't need it. Didn't have a place for it, and didn't like it's blonde finish.
It sat in the garage till October when I put it in my entry decorated with a dangling eye ball in a birds beak for Halloween.
Nearby in an umbrella stand was the stock pile of yardsticks I have been collecting for a project. When the two were in close proximity to each other I made the connection - the lightbulb came on - and I knew they would become one.
There is no tutorial for this. The yardsticks were attached with nails, the edge was cut off and a router was used to finish it. I used CeCe Caldwell Traverse City Cherry with a wash of Virginia Chestnut Brown, which I also painted the top edge with.
Perhaps the key to obtaining this finish was painting, sanding, waxing, and distressing while in my jammies.
The distressing was followed with dark wax and I left the hardware as is.
I only wish I still had that old yardstick of my mom's. It would be on this table top.
I also hit part of the mirror with some of the red. I ran the brush over lightly and wiped it back. I can't say how long this table will stay in this spot, but the warm tones are nice for this time of year.
*Update: As of January the table is still there, however the glass candle globe didn't make it. It was pretty easy to hit as you fumble in the dark for that light-switch. Just saying.....

I love this table Bliss. Sorry about the mishap..happens all the time around here. You should have seen the mess I had this morning. CUP of COFFEE fell of my desk, all over rug, walls, door..it went flyin!
ReplyDeleteYour table is wonderful. I see them and wondered about making one, but I don't think I have the skills. I will just enjoy looking at yours.
ReplyDeleteThe table turned out so beautiful. I love the yardsticks and the finish really came out perfect.
ReplyDeleteThis table *rules*. I remember that post about your mom and the Christmas cactus...which was truly a beautiful post. How wonderful that you have another project inspired by her, that will bring back happy memories of her. I loved this table when I read your guest post and I love it even more here.
ReplyDeleteLove the finish on that table. Kids these days don't know what a good butt whipping is.
ReplyDeleteI should have known! Jammies is the secret to great craftsmanship! That table looks amazing.
ReplyDeleteA great table! Loved it when you guest posted it and now even more that you've posted it here. Great job!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Love the yardstick top!
ReplyDeleteAs for the glass candle globe...11 year old boys aren't very gentle around stuff like that either...light switch or not. Just sayin'.
I have much envy over this wonderful table! I hardly ever see vintage yardsticks when I'm out and about, but you've got me lookin' for them at least. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteLooks awesome Bliss! I would love to do the same, but alas I have just one yardstick.
ReplyDeleteStacey :o)
I love it, Bliss! I've been stockpiling yardsticks and someday hope to actually do something with them. I hope I find a table I don't like and can make it look as great as yours! Pinning!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea to top off the table with yardsticks. My mother once spanked me with a hand mirror which had an adorable girl's face on the other side of the mirror. There were even braids in her yarn hair. Needless to say, my mother broke my favorite hand mirror when she spanked me with it. I was devastated and cried extra long and hard to make her feel guilty for it. Plus I feared there were mirror slivers in my butt. I think I succeeded in making her feel guilty. :D (Just for the record, I have a wonderful relationship with my mother)
ReplyDeleteAww, I wish you had that yardstick, too. Your table is pretty special...even without it.
ReplyDeleteGreat table! I've been collecting yardsticks, but still haven't decided their fate. Someday!
ReplyDeleteFarmhouse hugs,
Cindy
This is great! I have often played with theidea of a yardstick top, but now that yardsticks are "hot," I can't find one for less than $5.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea !
ReplyDeleteBeautiful table. ;)
Rose
Love your table and you've got me thinking.... wonder if mom still has the yardstick that tried to keep me in line. Darn thing was harder to avoid than the wooden spoon! :)
ReplyDeleteTooooo cute..love the color!
ReplyDeleteThis is a gorgous little table. I love the playful yard sticks and that color is fantastic! Would love you to share at my Silver Pennies Sundays link party - http://www.findingsilverpennies.com/2013/01/silver-pennies-sundays-features-and.html if you get a chance! x
ReplyDelete@Amy - "this table rules" - LOL
ReplyDeleteI adore your table. I think most of my kitchen redo has been while in my jammies. I'm gonna need new jammies to celebrate when I'm done!
Blessings,
Linda
I LOVE this table, Bliss!!! Using yardsticks for a table top is on my to-do list... You know, the one that keeps getting longer and longer? Until then, I'll just come back here and visit yours. ;)
ReplyDeleteLove love love this table Bliss!! Fabulous job!
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite projects -- I've been inspired to start collected yardsticks the past few months because of this! So far -- the big TWO. Not easy to find, but it's all about the hunt anyhow, right?
ReplyDeletexo Heidi
What a unique table now! That started out as an ordinary demilune and now it's a piece of art. Too bad that the sight of a yardstick doesn't give you good memories though. LOL!
ReplyDeleteThis table turned out beautifully! I still am on the hunt for my own collection of yardsticks ;-)
ReplyDeleteI love this! I need to find me some yard sticks! Great project idea - thanks for sharing! Hugs, Leena
ReplyDeleteI love it, Bliss! Absolutely LOVE it! That would be fun to have your mom's yardstick. :)
ReplyDeleteLove it, love it, love it. Great color, and composition.
ReplyDeleteI've broken a cloche or two myself! I do remember this table and I still love it! I only have one yardstick, wonder what I could do with it??
ReplyDeleteLove it. I need to start collecting yardsticks. I would love to see that on a desk, but I would need a lot of yard sticks for that.
ReplyDeleteThat is a really cool table to add the yardsticks too! Great job!
ReplyDeletelove the table, how fun and your story lines are always the best.
ReplyDeleteYour table looks wonderful Bliss! In my house growing up it was the wooden spoon.
ReplyDeleteI've been saving my yardsticks -- but don't have nearly enough yet! But I will take your advice to do this in my jambes!
ReplyDeleteHave to pin this because one day in the very near future, I will obtain yardstick domination!
Did you just saw off the excess yardsticks after you glued them to the table?
Kelly
I need a table like this one...for $10...so I can use all those yardsticks I've been collecting...and put it in my front entry just like you. This is awesome Miss Bliss!!
ReplyDeleteStill love it :) R.I.P little glass dome...been there!!
ReplyDeleteThis. is. awesome.
ReplyDeleteI have about 10 yardsticks sitting in a cold dark space in my storage shop. They are wishing I was more like Bliss and would give them a chance to shine. I'll never be like Bliss so forever they will probably sit - in that cold dark space.
Thanks for sharing Miss Bliss:)
ReplyDeleteomg, D... you crack me up.
ReplyDeleteYou must get tired of me always saying that, but I MEAN IT!!
My mom hit us with yardsticks, wooden spoons, and fly swatters.
I would like to say the swatters had never been used, but I'm not one to lie.
Your table turned out awesome! I am glad it is still there.
Sorry about your cloche. :(
Your comment about "Dave" on my blog had me laughing out loud.
Too doggone funny, D.
Love ya!

This is just A-M-azing! It's really unique-LOVE!
ReplyDeleteI'm dreaming of creating my very own yardstick table. Now I just need to find me some old yardsticks!
ReplyDeleteOh, and my mom used to chase us with a big spoon. Or big fork. Maybe even a big knife. Think I might prefer the yardstick ...
:) Linda
That is seriously gorgeous - love it!!!
ReplyDeleteI can remember my mother once chasing me around with a rubber slipper - and me leaping over beds and tables and screaming like a serial killer was chasing me - and she just gave up lol
xxx
I love this table! What a great find for 10 bucks girl! Topping it off with the yardsticks...genius! Since I am most creative in the early mornings...I craft in my jammies....alot!! (10a.m. is early morning right???!!!)
ReplyDeleteI love anything with yardsticks. I never got whacked with one because I was an angel, either that or mom was working all the time and didn't catch me at anything. Your table came out great. I like the router idea. Gave it a nice finish on the edges.
ReplyDeleteLoved it at Debbie's. Still love it. It's twice loved. I've got two yardsticks. I guess I better keep saving them!
ReplyDeleteRIP poor candle globe :(
Nice job on the table - it's gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure I commented on this before, but I love the paint finish on this.
ReplyDeleteI am visiting from Debbie Doos! I also posted a yardstick table project. Love the colors and the shape of your table. It turned out really cute and yardsticks in my opinion are the coolest! :)
ReplyDeleteJust found you through Made in A Day linky party. Love this table. What a great idea for those old yardsticks. I'm your newest follower and a fellow newbie. I hope you'll join me too at www.crazythriftycrafts.blogspot.com.
ReplyDeleteWell, you got me thinking. I have a table and the top needs some sort of finish. It won't likely be yardsticks, but yours do help me to think differently. Kept trying to figure how I could get a sheet metal finish for mine, but that seems too difficult to get just right. I'll keep thinking. This is just wonderful.
ReplyDeleteLiz
PS: Without Jammies, the world would likely be a cold barren place void of crafty ladies' creations.

It's gorgeous, Bliss! I love the character of old yardsticks. You did a beautiful job (as always). I'm going to add this to my highlights collection tomorrow. :) Thanks so much for sharing! Hope you're having a great weekend!

This is fabulous! Aside from the awesome yardstick top, I love the rustic distressed red you painted the table too. Nice makeover!
ReplyDeleteMarie@The Interior Frugalista
