Console Radio Cabinets

Radios circa 1930 - 1950, Song circa late 70's

OK, so these two beauties go back a bit farther than that song,
but I'm tired after doing yard work
and that's the oldest radio song I could think of.

More importantly......
What one should I keep and what color (s) should I paint them?

  1. I like them both, but if I had to pick, I thing I would keep the one on the left. I think you should keep them both and turn them into side tables or night stands. Color? That's hard to say, not knowing your colors, but speaking for myself, it would have to be white or a warm white, simply to go with my house. Then again, I think you could go with something bold and make it really pop! Whatever you do, I know you'll make those babies sing again!

  4. I just recently redid a radio cabinet. You can see it here: http://bluestarantiques.blogspot.com/2013/03/radio-revamp.html
Last weekend I found another one that has legs and the front folds down. Can't wait to transform it into a desk! How fun they are! Good luck with yours!

  6. I'd keep both. I would keep them just they way they are...character!

  7. I like the one on the right...very art-deco looking. Don't ever ask me about color, because I'm always going to pick green. Any green, doesn't matter (except for Emerald Green, ugh) I love green. You and Suzan and your songs...maybe that's why I don't do furniture...I don't remember enough old songs.

  8. I like the one on the right as well. I would paint it black or blue over red (Letting some of the red show through) and turn it into a bar. But I want to turn everything into a bar.

  9. Ditto what Kathryn said. I'd keep the one on the left and use the other in a fun window display at your store. I would keep the wood finish and refresh it with one of those Fornby products. I'm from the Midwest, what do you expect? We love our old wood. :)

    Fabulous old pieces!

  10. I prefer the one on the right, I'd paint it antique white but leave the top, the base and the radio part in natural wood. It would look fantastic!!!

    Happy Sunday!

  11. Keep them both! And I think I see some Bliss magic in their future!

  12. My immediate reaction is that the one on the right needs to be a bright, bold color, along the lines of abusson blue or a navy blue lacquer, emerald green, teal or even red/orange. The one on the left could be more subdued, like gray or I really like the idea of a creamy yellow. Mint greens might look nice on either, lighter for the left, bolder/brighter for the right. Depending on which of those things works with your decor, I'd go with that. I also like the wood, and I'm usually not much of a wood person, but there's something about the character of these pieces that makes them hard to resist as-is. So doing something with the one on the right in a more subtle color that leaves part of the wood showing is also a nice idea.

  13. These are both wonderful and knowing you, they will turn into something magical that I would never, ever have thought of...

  14. How come you only get to keep one?? I vote for the one on the right. Paint it something fun for your dining room renovation, and put some kind of a table top on it for a buffet table ;-)

  15. I would like the right one in a Tiffany Blue

  16. I say the left ~ it's the oldest I believe. Keep them both! Not sure where they will be placed so not sure about colors. Whatever you decide, they will look awesome! If you'd like to share where they'll go, maybe that might help re: color.

    Have fun!

  20. I want both, but leaning to the left, but I lean to the left anyhow.....I like a bright bold color with some funky antique accents, distress, glaze, wax, the works. Where did you get them?

  21. OHHHH the one on the left and how about spring green cause why not? ;) fun finds!

  22. Why only ONE? I like the left one for it's interest but I think you need to get your hands on both!

  23. Oh my - it has been forever since I heard that song and now it will probably be stuck in my head just because of some little graphic on Bliss's blog! Ugh!

I have an old stereo as well but haven't touched it. I have no inspiration - so i will be anxious to see what you do with yours.

  25. I'm not even gonna pretend to suggest a color, because you'll come out with something amazing that I never would've considered and I'll wonder what I was ever thinking. And keep them both! :)

Have you seen where talented techies take these things and turn them into Ipod docks with working speakers? That is on my dream project list! A bold, rustic color would be so fun with either of these!!

  30. I like the left one, but I think the right one would be awesome painted a funky color. I think I might be tempted to use both of them as bedside tables. Gut them and make the fronts doors for storage. They're both pretty awesome.

  33. Those are pretty neat! I think the one on the left has some art deco interest. It would depend on where you're going to use them before I could suggest a color. Nice finds!

  34. Both of those radios are great but I am drawn more to the first one. As far as color, I'm never very bold and often indecisive which is why anything I paint usually ends up white :)

  35. I love the cabinet on the left. It has a lot of great details. Nonetheless, old radios are so fun and bring back so many memories.

  36. Love those! My husband's Dad owned a radio/TV business for 50 yrs....he has parts if you need any!! He's a hoarder!! LOL. I like the one on the right bc of those vertical bars.....seems more "ranchy"....It took effort to stop the computer from writing "raunchy"......obviously, they know who I'm writing to..........

  37. What color? I don't know. I'm not good at that but I can't wait to see what you come up with. Have you been going junking these last few weekends? There are a couple weekends left to pick up other peoples trash!
