Cake Testers From One30One Design

What's a cake tester?

Cake Tester with Lampwork Beads by One30oneDesign

The human version of a cake tester is probably someone who must have the most amazing job on the planet if they get to taste test cake.  Brawn tells me I'm a "Supertaster" because he saw something on the Discovery Channel and decided his wife met the criteria.

I think I would be a good cake taste tester.

But in this post a cake tester is a beaded bauble of beauty used for testing if baked goods are done, specifically cakes.

Think of a cake tester as a grown up version of a toothpick.  Very grown up.  They are referred to as "kitchen jewelry".

The fancy beads are known as lampwork.  A glass artist twists long glass rods over the flame of a torch, similar to glass blowing.

The beads on the cake testers are solid, not hollow bubbles, and they come in various sizes.  The small beads are all glass as well.

The rod is food grade stainless steel direct from the manufacturer.  That little hook at the top is hand bent and each piece of rod is hand cut.

Sometimes faceted fire agate beads are used for a more earthy natural look.  I give them as a gift to the family holiday meal hostess, with a cookbook for a bridal shower, or tucked in a gift basket.

I have seen some imitations.  Made on cheap wire that bends, a hat pin, or a squared bbq skewer.  Don't fall for their cheaper prices.

One 30 One Design has made over 300 of these things - on Etsy and for fine local shops.  Read the feedback in the Etsy shop.  100% positive.  You don't get that sort of comment love for nothing!

Everyone says the same thing..... that they love their cake tester or the recipient loved it.

They are beaded nice and tight.  Some folks say they are too pretty to use.

I say nonsense, I use mine all the time.

Packaged in a box with shred for easy gift giving.

And it is that time of year.  Gift giving time.

These cake testers are unique, one of a kind gifts.  No one else on the block will have one.  Although the designer would love it if they did!

One thing I know for sure..... the photos don't do them justice.

  4. I am lucky to be the proud owner of one of these glorious cake testers. It hangs in my kitchen and I get questions and compliments on it all the time. It really is like kitchen jewelry. I love mine and I think everyone should have at least one! Bliss you're pictures are so beautiful. If you ever get a job as a cake taster, I'll be your assistant, but not for the frosting part. I don't like frosting.

  11. I have three and each one is a work of art. One for cakes, one to look beautiful and one to stab my hubby with when he won't get a move on. It works, ladies. Get one or three!

  13. I have a very plain jane cake tester from The Pampered Chef. Do you remember that company? I'm not even sure if they're still around. I actually lost it at one time when it fell between my range and the counter top. I didn't find it until a few years later when we had to pull my range out to have it repaired. I was glad to retrieve it. I missed it. So much better than using a toothpick! However, if I had had a fancy one like those, then it wouldn't have fallen between the range and countertop. Mine has to stay in the pkg because otherwise I can't find it in the drawer. It almost disappears. Yours would solve that problem too. I like the idea of using them as a gift with a cookbook.

  14. I can't get over the detail on the beads. My first thought was that these are way too good to use on a cake, but as I read on to learn that they even have a stainless steel scepter, low and behold, these are the real deal. Kitchen jewelry, now that has a ring to it!!

  19. I have admired these each time you have showed these off. This time, though, they are being showed off in incredibly beautiful photos. It's hard to believe they are even prettier in person because they are stunning in pictures. That artist of yours is talented.

  22. You are right...the pictures don't do them justice! Mine is just gorgeous and it hangs in my kitchen ready for cakes (or to scratch that hard to reach spot between my shoulder blades in a pinch). They make a wonderful gift for that person who has everything!

  23. That's funny about being the super taster. I really think I am! I also have the super nose. I smell things no one else does. Which is a blessing and curse (usually a curse).

My neighbor is the neighborhood baker. So glad you shared this. Ordering one right now for her Christmas gift. We have been the recipient of her swoon worthy baked creations many a time now. She deserves some love, and I am not giving her my plate of cookies. Sort of like giving Rembrandt your own painting you did yourself. Ummmm, thanks.

  24. What a unique gift. I just might have to bite the cake tester and order a couple of these. I know I want one for sure.
