I loved dolls, playing house or going to the pretend store. I have all my old dolls, they are pretty scary and hidden under my bed. Any with curly hair got a hair cut.
The play food was really tiny back then too. If I'd of eaten that size portion all my life there would never have been any discussions with my thighs about their girth.
I think I need to find an old armoire and convert it into a play store like this one from Inspired Whims....
For the past year I've been pinning ideas to my Kid Stuff Pinterest board of cute play kitchens, with the intention of making one for a certain 3 year old.
I think the collection of ideas on my board is PDC.... pretty darn cute. My kid stuff board is a favorite, right up there with the Junkers United board and my Creative Furniture board.
This kitchen from Holly at Life as a Thrifter convinced me that whatever version I decide on, it MUST have a fridge.
At every thrift store or garage sale last summer, I eyed up old entertainment centers and night stands wondering if they fit the bill for my vision of conversion.
This nightstand redo from Bubblestitch Quilts inspired me to look for a similar nightstand. I found two at a garage sale and if I go this route I will challenge myself to fit in every feature I really like, just on a smaller scale. A window in the oven is also on my list of must haves.
Gail at My Repurposed Life worked on her play kitchen below till she had it just how she wanted it. She used several pieces of furniture and combined them in this build. Is that fantastic or what?!?!
You guys can laugh at me, but..... I think I want a career in building/upcycling old furniture into play kitchens. I love them all.
The one below is from a Hungarian blog, Szentpyr . So cute!
While those are some of my favorite kitchens, the one most likely to be built before summer is this outdoor one from Prodigal Pieces......
I'm a mud pie maker from way back, and not only would a certain 3 year old be thrilled to whip up some muddy entrees, but a certain 6 year old would likely join her to wallow in the mud.
When I saw that counter of mud pie making awesomeness my first thought was WHY OH WHY didn't I think of that years ago! I absolfreakinglutely love it! I think we will have to keep it by the hose for a quick rinse off of bodies and utensils.
I've even added metal ware to my list of items to hunt down at garage sales.
If you want to pin any of these please go to the original source, most of them will also have tutorials on how they were made so you can whip one up for your certain 3 and 6 year olds.
So which style gets your vote?
Oh I love them all...you need one for indoors and one for outdoors! My three year old granddaughter was over playing kitchen with me yesterday...alas, we just have a plastic kitchen and a cabinet...but we had fun!
ReplyDeleteI love them all! I'm amazed at the creativity of others. I would have never even thought of making a play kitchen from old furniture. Oh my poor kids, look what they COULD have had!
ReplyDeleteI love the Mud Pie outdoor one! I used to have a pile of old bricks behind the garage that my friends and I "built" into a "stove". We would cook pine cones and mud pies all day long. So. Much. Fun!
ReplyDeleteI love them all too, but the last one's my favourite, just think of all the fun kids could have making a real mess. I played shops when I was little and remember fondly all the little empty boxes and tins of pretend food that cost a plastic penny !
ReplyDeleteI noticed you were pinning lots of cute kiddy kitchens lately! You would be great at upcycling old furniture into kid kitchens for sure! I love the mud pie center. Can't wait to see what you do!
ReplyDeleteNow that I have my first grand child on the way I may have to start my own "kid project" board! Love them all!
ReplyDeleteAny of them would be fun! I have my chilhood dolls too and some are on display even though my kids think they are scary looking!
ReplyDeletethese are all so fun and different! you have GOT to see the makeover my friend bethany did on an existing kitchen for her daughter:

any kitchen that inspires creativity and happiness gets my vote! have fun. can't wait to see what you come up with.
ReplyDeleteI hope you build it soon, B! I love thinking about how much fun it would have been to have one of these...ANY of them. I know your brain is working on it...I can't wait to see it.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea. The one you are in love with looks like a professional chef's kitchen. I could totally have fun playing in it now!
ReplyDeleteXO,
Jane
They're all adorable! I just finished painting a toy stove and sink I bought 4 years ago. The grands have their own at their houses, so they mainly use mine for stashing toys. Now the outdoor kitchen gets my vote! Mud, water, what's not to love?!
ReplyDeleteOh with a year in the planning, yours is going to be fabulous! Jacob will be a mud wallower but maybe one of these days a little girl will come into the picture and I can make awesome stuff like these!
ReplyDeleteThey are all SO CUTE! A friend of mine had an ex-husband who built "Storybook beds" and sold them for bazillions until the economy tanked. If I ever have grandchildren, I am totally going to build a storybook room for them.
ReplyDeleteToo much cuteness, I never played dolls I was a tomboy I had a Tonka truck or I pretended I was Madonna....I might still do one of those things ;)
ReplyDeleteI love the one from Szentpyr!! What a great idea, Bliss! It's times like this I wish our only granddaughter lived closer (she's in Alberta)...only grandsons around these parts so they play builder with grandpa and only come to grandma when they hammer their little thumb. But I bet they'd love a mud pie building station!! Too cute!!
ReplyDeleteDebbie :)
I agree that the outdoor kitchen has the most potential for fun. But that Hungarian blog kitchen has it goin on! I wish MY kitchen was that cute!
ReplyDeleteI would not laugh if you built these as a career, I would applaud. I donated the old entertainment center to a thrift store recently and all I could think was: this could be made into an awesome play kitchen. Alas, there are no children at my household.
ReplyDelete(As a kid, I was always the boss. No specific industry, just boss.)
Can't wait to see the mud pie madness you create! I always dreamed of having my own play kitchen when I was little too. Oh, and a dollhouse! I really wanted a dollhouse!!!
ReplyDelete:) Linda
The little yellow oven with the ruffled curtain is adorable!
ReplyDeleteThese are the best kitchen redo's ever! Love them!! I got stuck on these ever since we took our oldest to the Portland Children's Museum. Their little store set up was the neatest thing and all the kids just loved it! My girls are both taller than me but I still think they should have one ~ lol
ReplyDeleteI love the turquoisy one. Heck, I love them all! It makes me want to go play kitchen too! And it makes the thought of having grandchildren one day a bit more tolerable. :P
ReplyDelete-andi
Those are all so cute!! I love them! What ingenuity!
ReplyDeleteIt's so fun to see how people convert pieces of furniture into toy ovens, and refrigerators! I never knew you loved childrens kitchens so much. They're all so creatively done. I loved to play with those when I was little too. I remember getting a metal kitchen set for Christmas one year.
ReplyDeleteI love them all too! I just got a vintage, metal doll house and furniture for the grands to play with here. Or, was it for them? lol
ReplyDeletePlay kitchens are so much fun. My kids had a couple different really cute ones that we bought. I'm thinking I need to start a pinterest board to pin all these ideas so I can make one for my grandkids someday!
ReplyDeleteAll of em. But Life as a Thrifter, the Bubble Stich Quilts and Szentpyr are my top three. These are so fun! And I'm with Maureen . . . love doll houses too!
ReplyDeleteBliss LOL, that was me when I was a little girl too. I always played house and was a mommy and cooked in my pretend kitchen. My mom would give me spices to play with and I always had my dolls. These are so beautiful I would've loved them when I was young!!
ReplyDeleteCynthia
They are all freaking awesome... !! The talent these people have.!! I would of never thought of stuff like that... and you should start your own business making little kitchen's..
ReplyDeleteI think the kids and you would have more fun making mud pies that anything else. Easy to find those old aluminum kitchen pans too. Anxious to see what you do.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Audrey Z.
Aw, how fun are those! I was not a very girly child, which was too bad because my sweet grandpa built me an entire playhouse with kitchen and electricity that I was just never very interested in. :( womp womp.
ReplyDeleteAs I'm most certain you will make one of these in your own style, the features I see that I love are the dry sink, the salvaged door and drawer knobs to oven dials, the hanging utencils (I could use that in my kitchen), the hanging towel rack, the tea cup shelf and the curtain covered storage. Any one of these would keep a child up to their ears in fun for hours at a time!
ReplyDeleteWow! Love them all! But I love the thought of mud pies! That's totally awesome!~~Angela
ReplyDeleteWhile you're at it...why don't you write a cookbook of nothing but mud recipes. I've got a couple that taste like mud if you need 'em!
ReplyDeleteAs a kid, my play kitchen was a cardboard box. Needless to say...not too fire retardant!
Deb
These are too flipp'n cute. I have never seen anything like this and I can't believe the creativity that went into all of these adorable little makeovers. Thanks for sharing these with us. Who knew?
ReplyDeleteI never get tired of looking at these amazing play kitchens. People are infinitely creative and play kitchens are so fun! I am with you, Larissa's play kitchen is my fave. I was a major mud pie baker and this would have put me over the moon as a kid. Can't wait to see what you come up with!
ReplyDeletel love all the play kitchen goodness! Thank you so much for featuring my mud bar. I'm in the hospital now awaiting the arrival of baby number 6, which is going to be a preemie, so you made my day!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun post. I love all of these but that Hungarian one is oh so cute !
ReplyDeleteWhen i was a little girl my grandfather built a miniature wooden hutch and stove for me...in the pictures I must have been about 3 years old.
I love them all! You have done an amazing job. Can't wait to make one for my granddaughter!!
