Spool Cabinet Redo - Fake Drawer Fronts

The front of the old toy box that I converted into a better looking front of the old toy box, started out as recessed panels and ended up looking like a vintage spool cabinet.

I wanted the look of fake drawers to mimic the look of actual spool cabinets.

The wood we used was thin pieces of 1/4 inch luan because they fit right in without sticking out.

But that is a thin wood to work with, and I didn't help matters by requesting that the panels have rounded inside edges to match the rounded decals.

Not only did the Brawn of the operation deliver, he even took some photos of the process with his cell phone.  I thank him for that.

He cut the wood to size and used a *drill rasp* the size of the round edges on the decals.  These were not routed and he did not use a jig saw.

He lined up all the pieces and drilled them the same round shape.

He used the table saw and ripped a line on top and bottom which cut out the center panel and he sanded off the rough edges all the way along with the drill rasp.

I measured them up on the front of the toy box and made a template to follow so I could stick the decals on.

Below you can see the recessed panel before the fake drawer fronts went on.

The fake fronts work excellent to give the toy box added dimension.

The variation that the paint colors provide give it the look of a vintage piece of furniture that served its purpose for many years.

Dark wax from Maison Blanche Paint Company gives it the perfect finished patina.
