Did you remember to Spring ahead and move your clock an hour into the future?
Or are you like me and still falling behind?
Then he brought us a couple more.
From the minute I saw them with their big round tops, I knew a clock would eventually be made.
I'm certainly not the first to have a vision of a wood spool as a clock, the shape sort of lends itself to that idea.
We've used up a few from the stock pile ..... a spool top Christmas tree, and a spool patio table so far, and we'll probably make some other things before our supply is gone.
Originally I thought a clock would be made to hang on a bare patio wall outside, but as time marched on that's not how it played out.
My kids draw names among themselves for a Christmas gift exchange, so there is a pool of 8, and one son drew his married sister's name - the sister whose husband brought us the spools to begin with.
With the help of dad, son #3 sent one of the spool tops to live at their house as a re-purposed clock.
The clock he made for her has Roman numerals, the one Brawn made for me has traditional numbers. We may not have picked which we wanted, but our oldest has a request in for one, and he will be able to pick the style of his tin numbers.
Daughters Clock |
They keep the clock and the dresser in their family room. It's also the dresser that I painted a pine coffee table to match this past Christmas.....
While I was snooping around my daughters house, her cat didn't let me out of sight.
I think the cat was told to be on the lookout for snoopy camera carrying mothers.
I also gifted her with the cat last fall. Let me tell 'ya, that was a gutsy decision!
I knew time would tell, and thankfully it worked out so the kitten didn't have to come live at my house.
The kitten might look a little refined sitting there, but their clock looks nice and rustic and just the way we wanted it.
The problem with making a clock was deciding what would be used for the numbers.
That issue was remedied when I saw the clock Mindi from LoveToCreate made for her monthly contribution at My Repurposed Life.
Mindi had a full tutorial on how she made Roman numerals from tin.
Tin that we just happened to have some of. (If you want the tutorial you will have to stop over and visit her post {here}, she's the brains behind the tin idea).
Like I mentioned, my daughters clock has Roman numerals, and the one Brawn made for me has numbers, and he and my son were able to make both styles by snipping the tin to shape.
The tin is called roof flashing and it's all held in place by silver round head tacks hammered through the slightly rounded tin into the spool.
Her clock also has a working mechanism, mine has some temporary wood hands till I order up the real thing.
My Clock |
The mechanism has to be a heavy duty one to move the big hands. The one my son bought for his sisters clock was just shy of $25 dollars including shipping and it came with the longer metal hands.
Till I get around to ordering mine, it's forever 9:00 on my wall.
It's one clock I don't have to spring ahead right now.
That is just too cool Bliss!
ReplyDeleteOH this is SO awesome! Love this idea! I love the creativity in your home...
ReplyDeleteFantastic idea Bliss - it must be so heavy though!! Love the way this looks.
ReplyDeleteThis really is awesome! Put them in your shop!! STAT! I think I like the Roman numerals a smidge better than the Arabic numerals...but just a smidge!
ReplyDeleteI love oversized clocks and I love rustic wood so that it a wonderful look! I think the roman numerals are my fave. I would love to have a large homemade clock like that.
ReplyDeleteYou are way less lazy than I am - I think I would have just used house numbers, but your tin ones look much more cool!
ReplyDeleteSince it's German, I'll say that is Uber Cool!!
ReplyDeleteI love the clocks Bliss!!! They turned out amazing and doing the numbers was a fun idea! Thanks for the shout out too! :) I still want to get some bigger hands for mine, I guess I should just order them too...
ReplyDeleteHey Bliss! Love all those clocks! I think I need some spools. :)
ReplyDeletethanks so much for the shout out to MRL and Mindi!
I only had a couple of clocks to spring ahead.... most of mine are "smart".

How cool is this?! Super clever on the tin strips too! Love the industrial edge!
ReplyDeleteyou are just amazing....except that you can't tell time! Love this.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking of moving to Minnesota. Just so I can put in orders and meet all the children of the corn.
ReplyDeleteI want a big clock ! ... and I LOVE both of these. The spool top may be a little bigger and heavier than what I want, but they sure make pretty clocks. Great job as usual.
ReplyDeleteThanks.

I love the industrial vibe of the oversize clocks!! Well done!!
ReplyDeletethat is awesome, bliss! we spring ahead and i had a very angry 9 year old at 6 pm.... he asked for a snack and i said no because we were having dinner at 6:30- he said it was an hour and a half away. i replied that it was 30 minutes away... and boom... rage. "i hate daylight savings! it's dumb!"
ReplyDeleteVery cool! i love big clocks and I cannot lie.
ReplyDeleteI saw a spool used as a side table to store books, and nearly sent you the picture because it was such a good idea, but I don't think you'll ever be short of great ideas. Love the clocks and also need to mention your amazing photography again, it's easy to see you're a professional.....that cat picture, wow.
ReplyDeleteOh how fun! I still have several spools out at the farm. I like the idea of a patio clock, so maybe I'll give it a try. At least for now your clock is right twice a day!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE them Bliss - and have been looking for something to make one with for years ( considered a round table top because I can't find spools !!! )
ReplyDeleteWhy doesn't your clock permanently read 5 o'clock? ( it's always 5 o'clock somewhere and time for cocktails LOL )
xoxoxo
Roman numerals would be a LOT easier to make than numbers, but Brawn seems like a very patient guy. I really like big clocks, just don't have the wall space for one.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! Where did your son purchase the clock mechanism? We've been looking for one and can't find a reasonably priced heavy duty one!
ReplyDeleteEbay.
DeleteThanks!
DeleteLove the clock, and the dresser is super fun too.
ReplyDeleteHow fantastic is this! !! That's all I got
ReplyDeleteCindy
I love your clock Bliss! So cool! You know you could sell the stuff you make. You need a shop! Wouldn't that be fun?
ReplyDeleteYour clocks turned out really really really really cool! Oh, did I mention, I love them? :D I have three table tops patiently waiting their turn. I'll have to set aside some time and try the flashing. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI'd like to order one for my house too. You'll deliver, right?! Seriously...I need one of these...or at least you and Brawn to help me make one!
ReplyDeleteLove the clocks! I want one too.
ReplyDeleteLike so many other items out there, they just don't make clocks like they used to. Yours look like they will stand the test of time, they're gorgeous!!!
ReplyDeleteYou. Are a genius.
