But even before ground was broken, some things started to take shape.... a whole year ago.
Last year this time I stalked #1 Daughter-in-laws Pinterest board for something that Brawn could make them for Christmas.
An inspiration light was discovered pinned and I crossed my fingers that it was something they would like, not just something pinned accidentally.
Then not one, but two faux beam lights were made.
Two, because when something is that cool, you also make one for the home of #1 Daughter and #1 Son-in-law.
The components and parts for the lights were purchased and he got busy sculpting some new pieces of pine to look like aged old barn boards.
That beam shape above started from these three boards.....
The man with the tools got to work in his garage fitting everything together.
A simple hollow trough shape was created to look like a wood beam.
Then he started chiseling and whipping the wood with chain or hammers while brandishing knives, to beat it up.
The wood chips were flying and he was left with a carved and beat up looking thing.
I'll have you know the knife wielding warrior of wood also remembered to take cell phone pictures as he sculpted away. I thanked him for that.
A custom mix of dark stain was applied and allowed to seep into all the nooks and crannies.
He fashioned some faux metal straps with bolts but in the end, #1 son opted to remove those, preferring the beam to have a long expanse of beamieness with only the bolts.
A light would not be complete without the parts that make it actually light up.
So on Christmas Eve 2014, Brawn sat at the dining room table and wired up all of the corded lights, for not one, but two hanging faux beam lights.
It was not a fast process, so it was a good thing Santa didn't have to put together a toy with a million parts or anything else that also required time.
Of course one of Santa's elves was surely waddling around putting finishing touches on her own last minute projects.
So almost one year later, the light hangs over their kitchen island. The island is awesome in and of itself, so I will be sure to take some photos of that once they move in.
The light hangs proud in all it's glory, in a kitchen I am in love with.
From the creamy white cabinets with an antique glaze, to the shelves that adorn the kitchen window, I love it all. Rustic touches married with a fresh look, sort of like the two of them.
Catch a glimpse of that vent hood in the background.... oh how my eye is drawn to it. Custom built by the grand poohbah himself, the man with the power tools, the Brawn of the operation.
And I don't think he know what he hath done......... for his wife wants one now too.
The winner of the cake tester was #16, Laverne. She has been contacted.

ReplyDeleteHi there. I really need help. I'm doing a similar beam with cords and I don't know which cords to get. Hardwired ones? Ones that plug into a socket? And which ones do I get so that there isn't a heat issue with the wood? HELP.
ReplyDeleteSunny, I am not an electrician so I won't give you advice for how to wire your own lights. Research the UL approved component. But if you are not sure what to use perhaps you should not be making an electrical light yourself maybe you should get the help of an electrician.
DeleteGot it. Not so much the wiring. I have an electrician coming in to wire it. I just need to buy the right cords. How are yours wired? Plugged into sockets or hardwired to the ceiling? I don't wanna buy ones and then find out that I have to have all 10 hang from the ceiling. They sell the sets in furniture stores but they have switches and plugs so you can essentially plug them into any socket in the house. But they also sell individual ones that are hardwired. Thought you might have some insight on which ones you bought.
DeleteOurs are hardwired, none plug in. We bought them on line from a lighting supply business.
DeleteGod he did a good job on that beam. So I just need to google an electrical supply source and look for "corded lights"
