Toy Box To Cool Spool Cabinet

This project was started about 20 years ago.

All in my head.

*Reminder for anyone whom I have not made this perfectly clear to in the last few years;

I. Can't. Sew. 

But I can paint!

I have not created anything with thread.

In fact I removed all the thread from the 6 vintage spools needed to make the knobs on the spool toy box.

This whole thing started with this sheet of decals for a spool cabinet that I bought from the VanDykes Restorers catalog for twenty dollars.

Twenty years ago for twenty bucks.

I saw some on Ebay last week, same price.  No inflation on decals I guess.

I waited 20 years to decide on the right project to use the decals on.  Is that procrastination at it's finest?

We have been using this heavy garage sale toy box for about two years now.

It was a ten dollar special that arrived in the family room in a very pale yellow.

It holds important stuff like Rescue Hero's, a farm animal or two (thousand) and some naked dolls.

I always intended to redress the dolls and to paint the outside, but I didn't want a cute toy box - my vision was more like a cute box hiding toys.

I started by giving the pale yellow a couple coats of Maison Blanche paint in Wrought Iron with all the toys still inside.

There may or may not be toys inside with black paint splatters.

Brawn made some thin wood fronts to mimic an antique spool cabinet and add dimension.

The decals are a coppery-goldish metallic color, so I wanted to also give the box sort of a metallic sheen, but that part is hard to see in the photos.

Maison Blanch has a line of metallic paints called Organza.  I mixed some of the colors to get the copper-gold look I needed, rubbed it on and then wiped it back off.

I used different colors of the organza on the faux drawer fronts to give them all a well used vintage look, and I finished up with a coat of Maison Blanche dark wax.

Not too bad for disguising toys huh?

I have to take a second to tell you - this group post by myself and my Maison Blanche painting pals, is suppose to be all Spring-like and blooming, so as you read you would hear birds chirping in your head.

But it's still all brown and ugly outside.

We've got no Spring yet.

All I've got are some fake flowers, so lets just pretend ok?

At least the snow is melted and the trees are tapped - those white jugs in the sea of brown are the start of maple syrup making, which means Spring IS on it's way here.

Later in the week I'll give you the details of the build, like those awesome fake fronts we added as well as the spool knobs.  Oh, and the top has a graphic on it that I will show you too.
