Long Live Rock Teen Boys Dresser

rock and roll dresser
It's Only Rock and Roll, but I like it!

What started out as an 'ol lemon needing a LOT of lemon-aid, has turned into a cool drink of summertime rock & roll.

Lemon tree very pretty, lemon dresser not so much.

I picked this piece of craptastic yellowness from the side of the road with a free sign on it.

My very first such act.

I figured at the least I could burn it in the back woods if it was too trasherific.

Using my new vocabulary of craptastic-trasherific, the 'ol lemon has morphed into a very keepable dresser for my 13 year old music loving drummer of a son.

He has been waiting for me to finish his bedroom since August.  He is the patient type.  This dresser challenge was just what I needed to get kick started.

Craptastic

First a coat of CeCe Caldwells Hershey Brown paint, waxed with Annie Sloan's clear wax and some heavy distressing to give it that beat up on the road rock & roll look - we are not talking Celine Dion here!

Annie and CeCe work together like old friends, and to think I didn't know either of them 3 months ago.  I wanted the dresser to be taller, and literally turned around in the garage (which is hard to do in our garage) and sitting on the shelf were two wheels with the $1.00 price tag from a garage sale still on.

I asked Brawn if I could use them, since I picked them up thinking he might need them, and his reply was, "yeah, two wheels don't do me much good to move anything".  I think he was being sarcastic, don't you?, even though he said it nice.

The beat up side had to be replaced and we just slapped on some junk wood .

The only Ouch to repair
I don't need to wheel this dresser around, so the wheels are only for show anyway and having only two was just fine.

The fronts of the top row of drawers were sawed out in anticipation of the chicken wire insert.

For handles I used pull tags of what ever I found in the junk drawer..... rabies tags from past dogs, a cross.

I raided my sons closet for old belts, (I did save him one for dress pants) and those became the drawer pulls, all nicely air stapled on.

I really didn't want to spend much time making this thing pretty, it's suppose to be slammed-around-on-the-road beat up, so not getting each task perfect or touching it up was hard at first.

But really the hardest part was deciding what music "things" to put on it, so I asked for input from the little rocker himself.

He is his mothers son, no rap for that boy.  One drawer says "for those about to rock" from AC/DC - devil music to some, makes-me-wanna-dance to us.

Jenny I Got Your Number
The phone number?  Just say it out loud to yourself and I dare you to not have it in your head all day.

Little Rocker wanted something from California so we settled on Hotel California with my rendition of the album cover.

Not so detailed since I did have to paint it freehand, but it highly resembles the cover.  I love the faded distressing.

The drum sticks on the side are an old pair that I sent older brother to find for me with the instruction, 'any old pair of sticks will do', and they were nailed on below the song I can't get out of MY head.

Banging drums here is a daily occurrence with 2 percussionists.  This is my favorite part of the dresser.

No fancy machine was used for the lettering, just good old stencils, stamps or a paintbrush.

Why yes that is a banjo you see

I wanted the other side to be reminiscent of mementos saved like on a bulletin board; ticket stubs, important reminders like "turn up the radio" on the old black 45 record etc..

Those were the days.... for me, not him.

The rock 'n rolling dresser was all moved in when son came home from school.

I got a hug, a kiss and "it's awesome mom, thanks".  So worth it.

Total cost, somewhere between $2.00 and $10.00 being generous on the cost of using the paint and wax.

  130. This is completely awesome! With two musicians sharing a room I am trying to come up with something to help mesh their styles.... think reluctant sax and mallet percussionist (yeah all those percussion instruments that leave people scratching their heads like vibraphones, xylos, marimbas, etc.) Once again great job and I really, really do love this!!

  159. My husband (age 64) has been a drummer all his life and has a recording studio in a basement bedroom. Something like this would be AWESOME for that room for all his microphone cords, extras sticks, etc. Thanks so much for the inspiration! Kris from Wadsworth, OH
