Staining Pine Dark Espresso

I found a task I might dislike more than painting dining room chairs.

Staining twelve, six-paned grids and four bun feet.

And then varnishing them.

Actually I didn't hate staining the bun feet, those were easy.

And it all had to be done.

To turn this family room game cabinet.......

Into this family room game cabinet.......

Not that I don't like the stain color puritan pine, in fact 20 years ago I probably went through 10 gallons of the stuff I loved it so much.

I'm just ready for a change, which means I talked someone else into being ready for a change too.

But before I could stain that cabinet and those grids, someone had to remove all the log siding from the walls in the room, including behind that game cabinet, and then paint all those walls.

I planned on doing the painting part, but a disc in my back had other ideas.

So I supervised the log removal and wall painting from my vantage point on the couch - recuperating just in time to start staining grids.

  1. Love the re-do on the cabinet. Due to a problem between Google an Yahoo and my blog being on BlogSpot, I keep showing up as a no-reply commenter. Anyway, just wanted to say I love your blog and have it on my bloglist, waiting to see what you do next!

  5. What? You didn't paint it white? And from that picture, it looks like wall log removal is a breeze. Which I'm guessing it's not at all ...

  8. That cabinet looks gorgeous in it's new darker color! I'm sorry to hear about your back. I don't know how you even stained that cabinet then. My next door neighbor injured hers a few years ago and ended up having to have surgery to fix it. She fell and it caused a slipped disc (I think). Hopefully, yours is not that serious.

  9. Wow you are making some big changes...and I like them! That does look like a horrible job with those grates, but you gave that wonderful piece of furniture, new life! Beautiful! Hope your back is better...I've been battling mine for a few months now, too. We work too hard.

  10. Supervising can be a good thing. I hate staining too. That's why I always use gel stain or a dark wax to get stain happening. The cabinet looks great. What a great storage piece!

  13. Feel better soon! LOVE the new look..and the fact that Brawn is as "excited" about this project as you are. Would you mind sharing the secret to getting guys "enthused" for things like tearing out walls? :)

  15. Now... was that just a brilliant evil plan on your part? ;) hehehe. So glad you are feeling better.
And WOW... those are both, huge projects. Love the new dark look. But would hate the during too. No patience for that tedious stuff. Completely changes the feel of the room between that, and deleting the log walls. Big changes!! Go Bliss & Brawn.

I'm guessing you're enjoying the newly refreshed room but I'm glad you kept the log siding in other parts of the house, as I really like the look of it.
