Vintage Shoe Lasts Thrift Store Decor April

April showers bring May flowers, or at my house April brought shoe lasts.

A gloomy day seemed like a good time for a project to rain down, so I made something I could use for the Thrift Store Decor Challenge this month.

I picked up these old shoe lasts because I liked how they looked.

The peg part said to me, "HEY.... look - I'm a French Shriner shoe hook".

And I always listen when French Shriner's speak to me about hooks.

I brought them home and stuck them in a drawer waiting for that rainy day when I wanted to make a project.

Or maybe I just forgot about them?

Whichever, it doesn't matter, I just thought they looked like something I could hang stuff from.

This was such a simple project, that I'm going to do something I rarely do...... I'll write the dreaded tutorial.

One piece of barn wood.
Three sheet rock screws.
Prepare your board, I just revived it with a rub of Howards Restore-A-Finish.
Screw the shoe lasts on from the back.
Hang the whole thing up.

I think I'm going to hang it in the boys bathroom when that's ready to decorate.  The more hooks, the less stuff on the bathroom floor right?

Although the other bathroom has plenty of hooks and the towels still end up on the floor, hmmmm.

  1. Mine are still in a box in the sewing room. This is a great way to use them but you might as well hang cool stuff on those hooks because you know those boys aren't going to hang up their towels. ;) And thank you for the dreaded tutorial.

  2. Those shoe lasts look great turned into a towel rack. I love the patina on the old wood. I have one of those old wooden shoes but not with the knob on it.

  6. I've had a pair of these for years. At one time I used them for bookends, but never really knew what else to do with them.

This is a great idea! Thanks!

  7. I love these. I have a small collection of shoe forms but mine don't have the little hook things in the heal.

  9. Well seeing your shoe last hook gadget makes me feel better. Made one of those few years ago in KY after finding shoe lasts. When we'd take it to craft shows people asked what it was for then want to buy it for $1. Don't think so and if they didn't know what to do with it, why would they want it?. Would be asked what could hang on it. Then be asked how to hang it. By this time, having to answer too many ?'s my patience were gone.
I know it's just their way but am not a Kentuckian and had too many experiences with same situation for other items we were selling too many times. We still have it, been hauled from KY to western CO, not selling it for dad gummed $1. Sorry if I sound like crabby old lady, probably am.
Think yours will look great in your boys bathroom, don't hang too high so they can reach it, but sure you thought of that already. Well this crabby old lady will wish you great weekend.

  12. Thrift shopping is really just an extension of me being that same kid and going into a place that's completely unconventional that has really endless possibilities in terms of outfits that you can put together and really just expressing yourself.
