I see something somewhere that I have never seen before and I get all pie eyed with wonder.
That was just the case when I saw a mud pie station that Larissa from Prodigal Pieces had on her blog.
Maybe you have heard of such a thing, but not me.... I was taken back to childhood where my mud pie station consisted of a card board box and little metal kitchen toys, in the wettest spot in the yard. And. I. Loved. It.
Larissa is a mom after my own heart. She and I both have six kids, and if you want to know that's a total of 120 fingers in the pie between us, only I'm older than dirt.
I sort of slapped my forehead - since I hold the title as the best mud pie maker west of the Mississippi - that I had not thought of this myself years ago.
No more wasting time, I plotted for a year to have one of my own.
This thing was dirt cheap to build. I won a bid at a local auction for a big heavy old work bench. That we didn't need.
But it was only a buck, I felt as though I'd hit pay dirt! I also got an old galvanized mop bucket for .50¢ and dinner out when we went to fetch them both.
Now I'm not gonna air any dirty laundry, but lets just say it's a good thing I'm as nice as pie, because my husband originally thought I could load that thing in a trailer myself.
So in addition to dinner out, my sugar pie honey bunch also tagged along to the dollar store with me. Where else can you get necessities to play in the mud for the same price as the whole mud station cost?
Brawn is a real sweetie pie, so when I waited till it was hot and humid outside to suggest we turn that big old work bench into the mud pie station of my dreams, he may not have batted an eye, but he did sweat buckets.
Almost every bit of the workbench was used - my goal these days is not to spend money, because we are a bit less dirt poor than the Clinton's after they left the White House.
I did buy some silver spray paint, but we had the chain, we had the wood, we had the bucket.
And next thing you know we had the Minnesota Mud Pie Manufacturing Company.
We had fun thinking of all the kinds of non pie-pies. We didn't use Mag Pie, Pizza Pie, cutie or honey pie, among others.
For all you city folks (which I used to be) a cow pie is the stuff that cows plop out in the field. Looks pretty much like a mud pie, and you can have free samples of it.
I also picked up a little beverage jug for $2.98. Spigots are fun, and it will keep the water fresh so it can be sprinkled over dry dirt to make some of the purest, finest, freshest mud around.
Because sprinkling with water cans is fun too.
There is a buffet line to multi task in the kitchen, and setting it up was easy as pie.
Dirt on the left, water on the right, makes mud in the middle. Math by Bliss.
Yes the molds in the picture below are real copper molds, heavy too.
Yes I realize people hang those on the walls inside their house, so you can shut your pie hole about it!
They were .50¢ for three of them, and I bought them specifically so a certain little cutie pie can make me some mud jello. Mmmmmm mmmmm!
I have no idea what I did with the third mold.
I felt like a dirty rat when I wouldn't let anyone play on it till I took a few pictures. I guess I sort of play a little dirty, but it needs to be moved closer to the hose for quick clean up of muddy waters.
I dug in the box of old flatware that I have and added some serving pieces, so my 100% organic mud can be dished up in style.
Have you ever seen anything as tasty as black gold?
Next time I'll give the details on putting our mud pie station together, then it will be clear as mud for you if you'd like to make one too.
I've got a few more metal ware items I hope to snag at thrift stores, like a coffee pot and bundt and loaf pans, otherwise I can cross "mud pie station" off my to do list.
I'll be back with some pictures of the mud slinging in action, but till then....... bye bye Miss American Pie.

This is absolutely ADORABLE! I love that you didn't spend much money, and I'm guessing those little ones will use it for years. .0000000001 cent/minute of use. I love t so much, I shared it with my husband, whose nickname used to be 'Pi.' As in 3.14159. He's all mathy that way.
ReplyDeleteHoly sh*t, Bliss. How is it that you manage to outdo YOURSELF????
ReplyDeleteFantastic, wonderful, best grandma ever.
I want to come over and play.
Get the cake ready and we'll make pie.
Adorable! I knew you'd come up with your version of the mud station! The kiddos are going to have so much fun playing in the mud, and that's just where I'm headed now. Your station is going to come in handy for family gatherings when (if) the kids ever outgrow it.
ReplyDeleteSo freaking cute!!! I love this... but I really think dirt must have come first. You can't possibly be older.
ReplyDeleteIf I bring my own mud, can I come over and play.you and your mud station are amazing.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I love it--so adorable! I want to come play in the mud!
ReplyDeleteThat is a lot of WOW for a couple of bucks! Amazing job, Bliss (and Brawn!)
ReplyDeleteThat is awesome, Bliss! There will be lots of fun happening there! I used to love to make mud pies...I'd let them dry until they were hard...and I'd use them for chalk on the sidewalk!
ReplyDeleteIt's a dirty job, but you did it! Too dang cute. When can I come play? I make much better mud pies than real pies!
ReplyDeleteThat is the fanciest American mud pie station I have ever dreamed up! Leave it to you to let your imagination make a station full of creativity for little and playful hands...... :)
ReplyDeleteXoX, Crystelle

I think you just won best grandma ever with that. Absolutely adorable I even love that they have copper jelly moulds to play with.
ReplyDeleteThis is so sweet! The kids must love coming to play at your house!
ReplyDeleteWaaaaaaaayyyyyyy clever and fun!
ReplyDeleteI have to have one! My kids would love this! This is the best project I've seen lately. You did it again Bliss! I like the coffee pot idea too.
ReplyDeleteYou did it! You can mark it off your to do list because it's perfect. I love every thoughtful detail. Great job!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this!! So much fun... I'll be right over to sling some mud!
ReplyDeletexo Heidi
I could have used this 25 years ago! That is a wonderful idea....you've certainly outdone yourself! ;)
ReplyDeleteYou rocked it! Love the sign you added and I know your grandbabes will love it! I think mine will last until I'm "old as dirt" and have grandbabes of my own. :o)
ReplyDeleteThat is the curtest Mud Station ever! I would've love that when I was little. We used to make mud pies all the time down in Georgia. We even "mud" painted our metal swing set, much to our parents' chagrin! You are a creative genius -
ReplyDeleteYou've outdone yourself again! How flipping adorable! I want to come over and make mud pies!! You've thought of everything!!
ReplyDeleteGosh, you would've been my dream mom growing up! I love how you come up with these great ideas for your family. That one is a hoot! I have never seen a real mud pie station before. But I would've been over there fast as lightening when I was a kid. I lived for that kind of thing. I actually even tasted a mud pie when I was little. I will say that was a BAD idea! LOL!
ReplyDeleteAll 7 of my grandkids are on the next plane to your house! Okay, maybe only the youngest 5. They would have a blast with this and, once again, you rocked this design! Pinning
ReplyDeleteThis is the pie in the sky coolest mud pie station EVER!! I can only imagine how long the young ones will stay occupied with this (and the adults, too) If you did go into the business of manufacturing mud pie stations, no doubt thay would sell out like hot cakes, I mean pies;)
ReplyDeleteAmazed, once again, by your creativity & brilliance!
ReplyDeleteI love reading your comments as much as your posts. The one above cracked me up!! This is just one more project that showcases how freaking talented you are!!!!
ReplyDeleteI bow to you ;)
What a dream for those littles! Have they seen it yet?
ReplyDeleteYou are a hoot, Bliss!
ReplyDeleteBrenda
I always enjoy your posts but this one is extra special. I must send this to my daughter. Maybe she will let my grandson have one of these. Priceless.
ReplyDeleteoh my, I used to be a pretty mean mud pie maker myself! My "oven" was a pile of old bricks that we stacked and "imagined" with. I love that your station is a thrifty project, but I love more the fact that it is something kids of all ages can enjoy and will spur their imagination. That is something that is sorely lacking in our kiddos in this age of all electronics all the time! Kudos to you!!!
ReplyDeleteMmmmmm....cow pies!!!!! My favorite! My brother's name is Patrick and his nickname has been Cowpatty forever. We never had a mudpie station, so Ima hafta come up and play with yours.
ReplyDelete-andi
Holy Mud Pie, woman!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely adorbs!
Well that is just fabulous and brings back some of the best childhood memories! You forgot Jacob's favorite....stinky pie!
ReplyDeleteI wanna come play!!! This is awesome!~~Angela

ReplyDelete~Allie http://thecraftiestallie.blogspot.com/
Well you just keep one upping yourself every. single. time.
ReplyDeleteThis is seriously amazing - the grandkids must be going crazy over this, right?

Stopping by to Thank you for sharing at One More Time Events and let you know you have been featured at this weeks party!
ReplyDeleteSeriously I'm very very very impressed. Your garden must really look like an outdoor room, with a mobile bar, mud pie factory and mini kitchen !
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness your house will be the favorite play spot in the neighborhood! I used to let my oldest play in the mud puddles in the greenhouse while I watered. She had a blast. I would just strip her down on the back deck throw her clothes in the washing machine on our way to the tub! Best memories! Love your mud pie station! Thank you for sharing at What We Accomplished Wednesdays. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Deborah
This is the cutest thing ever! Oh, how the kids must love you.
