Mud Pie Station

Sometimes I have these crazy thoughts, lets call them pie in the sky notions.

I see something somewhere that I have never seen before and I get all pie eyed with wonder.

That was just the case when I saw a mud pie station that Larissa from Prodigal Pieces had on her blog.

Maybe you have heard of such a thing, but not me.... I was taken back to childhood where my mud pie station consisted of a card board box and little metal kitchen toys, in the wettest spot in the yard.  And. I. Loved. It.

Larissa is a mom after my own heart.  She and I both have six kids, and if you want to know that's a total of 120 fingers in the pie between us, only I'm older than dirt.

I sort of slapped my forehead - since I hold the title as the best mud pie maker west of the Mississippi - that I had not thought of this myself years ago.

No more wasting time, I plotted for a year to have one of my own.   

This thing was dirt cheap to build.  I won a bid at a local auction for a big heavy old work bench.  That we didn't need. 

But it was only a buck, I felt as though I'd hit pay dirt!  I also got an old galvanized mop bucket for .50¢ and dinner out when we went to fetch them both.

Now I'm not gonna air any dirty laundry, but lets just say it's a good thing I'm as nice as pie, because my husband originally thought I could load that thing in a trailer myself.

So in addition to dinner out, my sugar pie honey bunch also tagged along to the dollar store with me.  Where else can you get necessities to play in the mud for the same price as the whole mud station cost?

Brawn is a real sweetie pie, so when I waited till it was hot and humid outside to suggest we turn that big old work bench into the mud pie station of my dreams, he may not have batted an eye, but he did sweat buckets.

Almost every bit of the workbench was used - my goal these days is not to spend money, because we are a bit less dirt poor than the Clinton's after they left the White House.

I did buy some silver spray paint, but we had the chain, we had the wood, we had the bucket.

And next thing you know we had the Minnesota Mud Pie Manufacturing Company.

We had fun thinking of all the kinds of non pie-pies.  We didn't use Mag Pie, Pizza Pie, cutie or honey pie, among others.

For all you city folks (which I used to be) a cow pie is the stuff that cows plop out in the field.  Looks pretty much like a mud pie, and you can have free samples of it.

I also picked up a little beverage jug for $2.98.  Spigots are fun, and it will keep the water fresh so it can be sprinkled over dry dirt to make some of the purest, finest, freshest mud around.

Because sprinkling with water cans is fun too.

There is a buffet line to multi task in the kitchen, and setting it up was easy as pie.

Yes the molds in the picture below are real copper molds, heavy too.

Yes I realize people hang those on the walls inside their house, so you can shut your pie hole about it!

They were .50¢ for three of them, and I bought them specifically so a certain little cutie pie can make me some mud jello.  Mmmmmm mmmmm!

I have no idea what I did with the third mold.

I felt like a dirty rat when I wouldn't let anyone play on it till I took a few pictures.  I guess I sort of play a little dirty, but it needs to be moved closer to the hose for quick clean up of muddy waters.

I dug in the box of old flatware that I have and added some serving pieces, so my 100% organic mud can be dished up in style.

Next time I'll give the details on putting our mud pie station together, then it will be clear as mud for you if you'd like to make one too.

I've got a few more metal ware items I hope to snag at thrift stores, like a coffee pot and bundt and loaf pans, otherwise I can cross "mud pie station" off my to do list.
