It was a dark and cloudy day..... (really)
I was out of scheduled posts...... (which took 3 months to happen)
At 6:53 the night before, I read a post from Andi at Delusions of Ingenuity........
And by noon the next day I was painting wing back chairs with Annie Sloan Old White Chalk paint and CeCe Caldwells' Virginia Chestnut, on a quest to use up all my different remnants of paints.
Also very skeptical of the process, but I trust Andi's opinion.
The two wing backs are old dining room chairs in a burgundy fabric with sage green around the edge of the leaves. The pattern is raised with a slight texture.
They are 20 years old. However not one spot on them is coming undone, although the fabric on the seats is getting thin.
None of the piping is loose, still taut and firm. I don't know what kind of glue they used but I need some of it for my 20 year spots that are no longer taut and firm!
Since they were so well made, I wanted to have them recovered by the same place I ordered them at all those years ago.
Not happening. The cost was going to be more than they cost new, even without knowing a fabric choice.
So I am painting the fabric and covering the seat myself.
At first I was going to cover them in drop cloth to match the dining room chairs I re-did, but that didn't seem to be first on my list of jobs to tackle so I figured I'd give the paint brush a chance.
I have not decided if the wing back will get some graphics other than a grain sack stripe.
The chairs were almost out the door, so I thought why not be brave like Andi and try painting the fabric. Nothing lost other than paint if they don't turn out.
Check out Andi's awesome chair transformation {HERE}
I will need to see how far I can stretch the remaining old white, and Virginia Chestnut paint. Two chairs, two less-than-half quarts of each.
If it works there will be a reveal yet this week.
If it doesn't work I have to go shopping for two chairs.
One coat down......

ReplyDeleteI am curious how you will like the feel of the paint. I have thought about trying it myself!

ReplyDeleteI loved Andi's so good luck I hope the paint holds out :)
ReplyDeleteYou are a brave one!!! Looks like it is working so far!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see how they turn out!
ReplyDeleteThat scares the heck out of me! Taking paint to a fabric chair is one brave undertaking! I know it is a popular thing to do now and is probably worth it to have a set of 'new' chairs. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteAndi is a genius! I hope yours turn out just as awesome! Mel painted some chairs too and hers were pretty fabulous! Now you guys have me looking at my ugly chairs.
ReplyDeleteYou are a brave woman, my friend! I just wonder if, once done, are they sit-able? We'll just have to wait to find out!
ReplyDelete:) Linda
Gotta know if it'll be comfortable or crunchy. Keep us posted. Thanks for the intro to Andi . . . I signed up!
ReplyDeleteGah! So excited for the reveal! I really want to try chalk paint but I'm going to start on furniture. Can't wait to see the fabric!!

ReplyDeleteHey Bliss...I hope your chair adventure turns out great! And thanks for sending me over to Andi's place...I spit all over my keyboard...but at least I didn't fall out of my chair. :)

I started 2 chairs about a month ago and ran out of paint LOL -
ReplyDeleteThey feel pretty stiff to me but everyone assures me they'll soften up - good luck - they look great from what I can see!

I will be excited to see how these turn out because I have 2 wing back chairs with the exact same fabric!!!!!! I have thought about painting them (I made slip covers for them years ago) just to see how it would turn out. I figured the worst that could happen would be that I would need to have them reupholstered. Can't wait to see!
ReplyDeleteI have never painted fabric before but have seen it done all over blog land, so it must turn out good. Hopefully, you won't run out of paint before your project is done.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see how they turn out! I just painted my settee and I love it!!!!~~Angela
ReplyDeleteI hate it when bloggers show half-finished pieces. I'm too impatient for that nonsense! :)
ReplyDeletecan't wait to see it!
ReplyDeleteGood luck Bliss and I can't wait to see and hear what you think.
ReplyDeleteCynthia

ReplyDeleteLooks good so far, and Andi's chair looks pretty amazing, so I'm sure they'll turn out.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I went to check out her post because I got to see Eddie, so adorable.
So excited to see how they turn out Bliss!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see how these turn out, Bliss, and how you like them...to be continued...
ReplyDeleteI'm cheering for you! I've heard so much about this technique and am so scared to try!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for the reveal and you telling us all about it. Good lock!

I bet it will be close. I've read that it takes a bit of paint. I need to read Andi's post. I've had a chair in the garage for 2 years now that I meant to paint the fabric on. Perhaps now I will be motivated.
ReplyDeleteGo big or go home! I am a chicken...I bought a little tiny footstool to try painting someday. Can't wait to see how your chairs turn out.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to hear your results! I have done lampshades with ASCP.
ReplyDeleteI have seen this done but have not tried it. I love grain sack and can't wait for the reveal!
ReplyDeletehugs,
Jann
I have an old chair my parents gave me (think it was my grandparents'), the fabric is in perfect condition and I keep saying I want to paint it. But I put it off (memories, maybe?). I think yours are looking fabulous so far, can't wait to see the finished result because I know it's going to work. (oh, it probably already has been posted...gotta catch up!) Debbie :)
