Stained Glass Mosaic Tray

I mentioned in my last post that it's mosaic week at Bliss Ranch.

The first project {here} was like stormy seas and this one is like a sunny day at the beach.

If I had any sharks we would have shark week too, but I'm fresh out.

All I've got is shards.... of glass.

I know, lame pun - just humor me.

In addition to the cook book/ipad holder for the kitchen counter, I transformed a plain tray for my cedar porch with light bright blues and a hint of yellow glass.

Unlike my kitchen and the rest of the house, my cedar porch does have some blue in it. The cushions are covered with blue ticking, just enough blue so this tray looks at home.

I picked the tray up for a buck at a garage sale last spring.  Another one of those things I didn't need but it was only a buck and I saw a blank canvas.

The process for the tray was the same as the cookbook/ipad stand, so if you really want to know how to make one you can check out that post.

Basically I cut, then glue stained glass remnants on. The whole project gets grouted and wiped down with a damp sponge till it's clean.

No rocket science here.

Barely visible in this photo, but to the right of the tray is a smashed china thermometer.  One of my favorite mosaic projects.

Another favorite mosaic project are custom wedding cake platforms to match the wedding colors.

The one above is black and white and the gray spots are pieces of mirror.  The top where the cake sits is a one piece mirror.

The round cake holder was done in autumn colors and has both smashed china as well as bits of stained glass as does the black and white one.

My friend Dii (hi Dii!) turned me on to smashing glass about 12 years ago.  She makes intricate detailed stuff that is much fancier and involved than the stuff I make.

For now the tray is sitting on a glass table, it's a nice summery aqua that brightens the area.

  17. I think mosaics are timeless. That probably sounds like I'm trying to sound sophisticated and artsy. Oh, alright, I am, but have you ever seen a mosaic that you wanted to re-mosaic? Your tray is a beauty, as are those cake plates, wow! And of course the the thermometer, too.
