$5.00 Piano Bench

I picked up a piano bench at the same auction as a headboard that I turned into a cottage entry bench.

Five buckaroos.

The deal with our piano is that it lives in the garage.

It used to be in the house but for whatever reason years ago it was moved out and never came back in.

It's a heavy antique upright, not something anyone wants to move on a whim.

And really, we don't mind having it in the garage.

Brawn is serenaded to Beethoven while he putters at the work bench, and when I rake leaves my daughter pounds out my favorite from her repertoire - Yellow by Coldplay, minus the guitars, lyrics and drums.

Her piano version earned her a place playing it at her biggest bro's wedding.

If you watch the video check out the paint job on the piano.

#2 daughter was using whatever old seating was sent to the garage, and her sheet music was left to tear or blow away laying on the piano top.

I let her pick the colors for the bench, knowing she would not choose my boring go to of white with black lettering.  And really, what garage can't use a bit of color?

I used a first coat of Maison Blanche Franciscan Gray then applied vinyl letters I made from black and white Contact paper.

The gray was painted over with Robins Egg which my daughter has used in her bedroom on the headboard door she made herself.

The paint goes right over the vinyl letters, then when it is dry the vinyl is peeled off and the letters are the original color of the gray undercoat.

I sanded it lightly and applied a coat of Maison Blanche dark brown wax to age it and accentuate the crevices.

She doesn't move any pianos, sell them or tune them, but she has been known to give a few of her brothers some basic lessons.

I could listen to the music wafting out of the garage all day, it makes those outdoor chores much more enjoyable.

  1. Love a good chalk painted piano bench!! I can't see my daughter going out to the garage to play, I think our piano tuner would throttle us if we did that anyway!

  8. That turned out so pretty. I like that shade of blue. The lettering idea was very creative. I grew up listening to my dad play the piano in our living room when I was little.

  9. Love the makeover! I kinda got my hopes up that there was a cheap piano moving company in the state, because I know how hard it is to move a heavy old upright, and it's in my near future...I hope.

I'll have to practice pulling contact paper off without removing the topcoat. Fun project!

  10. It's pretty. My daughter plays the piano, but she doesn't like distractions while she is studying.

  14. Outdoor music is the best. Especially when your kids are providing it. I can't believe you keep your piano in a garage!

  16. I now have a cutting machine but never used it, although I haven't done much at all in the last three months, let alone study all the instructions.
I'm going to try and catch up on lots of your posts Mrs. B, but there's really no need to comment on my comments. I'm just sorry I haven't been visiting - no real reason, I've just been lazy ! x
Btw, the bench is lovely, great lettering.

  17. I'm thinking #2 daughter is going to cherish that piano bench the way #2 daughter's mother is cherishing the sound of music coming from her garage ;D
