Rock And Roll Coochie Coo

Last weekend I attended a baby shower for one of my nieces.

When you forget someone isn't a 10 year old anymore it's strange when you realize they are now old enough to procreate.
Strange is also saying I'm a great aunt, which sounds like I'm really old.

It probably sounds old to me because when I was my nieces age all my great aunts were in their late 70's and seemed really old.

While I do consider myself a great aunt, an awesome aunt, I just don't consider myself an old great aunt.

And now because I'm not sure, I'm going to count right this very minute how many nieces I have; four, seven ..... 10.

I want to know how many nephews too, lets see; one, two, three...... 8.

That means that my mother in law has 24 grand kids if you add in my six.

I still know how to rock and roll and I may have just set myself up to make family shower gifts from now on, instead of wrapping up a sleeper with a blanket or two.

By the time these great-babies are grown up I WILL be that old great aunt in my 70's, and they'll have what I hope is some sort of a cool remnant of their babyhood - made by me - dear old great aunt Bliss.

I wonder if I'll be rocking anything other than a chair when I'm 75?

Maybe I'll be that wild old lady dancing in the home to what will surely be ancient rock and roll by then.

Heck the song I used for this shelf sign is already 42 years old.  Forty two - wowza.

How can that be, I just heard it on the radio last week.  Is that what oldies stations play now?

Anyhow, I've never in my life said coochie coochie coo to a baby, but I figure it's sort of a universal infant greeting for chubby cheeked little bundles, so it should withstand the sands of time.

Speaking of time... this little wooden doo-dad was removed from an upcoming clock redo project.

I hated it till I saw it laying on the garage floor and thought it might look good on this sign project.

It was attached with some small nails and painted the same as the rest of the shelf.

This gift is a good size - 2 1/2 feet by 2'.

I used my vinyl cutting machine to cut out the letters and adhered them to the pre-painted background.

I also used a new to me hint to prevent bleed under the letters........ go over the vinyl letters once with the same color as the background color of your letters.

Thanks to Painted Therapy for mentioning that in a post on subway art.

Not like this is the first sign I've made for goodness sakes, I don't always have trouble with bleed under, just the past couple signs.  This tip cured it.

I purchased a big ziplock of glass knobs and handles at a garage sale.  There were 6 knobs and 10 handles in the bag and it was a bargain at $10.00.

I used three knobs for the shelf hooks.

For signs I like to use the Maison Blanch French Lime Paint, called La Chaux.  It gives depth and adds an old word patina.

This color on the sign is Savonette lime paint.  It's a pretty minty green color.

There is also an under coat of of White Pepper, that is the color you see peeking through.

I distressed and sanded it then used clear and dark wax to accentuate the nooks and crannies.

I included a gift card so the mother-to-be could buy her own cute little baby things to put on the shelf and the knobs.

Cuz that's the way I rock and roll.

Ok, question about that tip....when you said background color of the letter....are you meaning the color of the surface the letter is on????

    1. Yes, exactly. Once the letters are on, you paint over them with the back ground color.

  17. What a great gift and those knobs are perfect for it! I'm with you and Kelly, feeling too young to be a great aunt (I'm 50) but since I became an aunt at 5 it was no surprise to be a great aunt at 26. My second oldest 'great' is in the middle of my boys age-wise. Okay I just depressed myself - I just realized that I have been a great aunt half of my life!
