we do it every day
For every minute I have to work -
I need a minute of play
Day in day out all week long -
Egads - 1984 was a long time ago... 30 years! Wow, someone is getting old around the Ranch.
No matter the age of that person, for sure things still go better with music.
This radio is an oldie too, and I'm pretty sure when it was cranking out the tunes there was no rock and roll blaring from the speaker.
The veneer was peeled pitted and chipping away, but Maison Blanche Vintage Furniture paint came to the rescue.
It had no guts when it became mine.
So I gave it back a bit of its glory days.
A couple summers ago I picked up two vintage radios for a total of $12 bucks. One actually works, which my husband claimed.
Opportunity in the way of Maison Blanche shipping out some of their creamy smooth no prep paint for me to dip my brush in, compliments of the company.
And then the idea part.....
It's got a little shelf in the front to hold stuff & junk |
#2 son bought a house a month ago and you know how bachelor pads can be.
When I saw sheer lime green and orange curtain panels pass through from a UPS delivery, I thought it needed a woman's touch, but the trouble is, he really hasn't asked me.
Probably because he doesn't think of me as a woman, I'm just mom, and orange and lime are not in my decorating palette, so what fun could I possibly be?
I wanted to paint him a dresser to use as an entertainment center.... "uuuhh, no I really don't need one".
OK.
Next time he came over I inquired.... can I paint you a side table? "uuhhh, I don't really need one right now, maybe when I get a couch".
Ok.
Third time was a charm.... I have this old radio I want to turn into something for you, is that ok?
His reply.... "You REALLY want to make something for me don't you... anything would be fine I don't have much".
No schmidt Sherlock, that's why I keep asking what I can make!
So besides a wife - to give that woman's touch to his decorating - what else does a handsome 25 year old need?
A maid, cook and gardener. Along with a secretary.
Yes I contemplated if I was the one who needed a bar in the cedar porch, however I have plenty of furniture.
And bars....
To see my dresser bar, click here |
The answer "my mom" will be uttered, and his friends will forever connect his frumpy middle aged mom to his cool bar.
The mom in me also contemplated making it a cookies and milk bar.
Reality.... he probably only eats cookies with milk at my house.
Things go better with rock.

Bliss at Bliss Ranch
Guided in product technique by:
Shannon at Fox Hollow Cottage.
The details:
Sanded the veneer, added a new shelf in the back and a panel in the front to hold napkins, cuz guys drinking beer always use napkins right?
Spray painted the spindles and front plate silver. Found old knobs in the garage and sprayed them too, then added some old wheels to the bottom.
Gave the top a coat of dark stain, and refreshed the middle veneer. Painted an under coat of Maison Blanche Ivory, and two coats of Maison Blanche Navy.
Because I'm impatient I stuck my letters on before the paint was dry, and when I pulled them off some of the ivory came off too. BONUS! Got the chippy look without sanding hard! Distressed through the navy in a few spots to give it a worn look like a pair of jeans.
The last thing I did was rub the whole thing down with stain, it gives it an aged look and blends the white in for a vintage feel.

ReplyDeleteCarrie-Eve @A-Hooahs-Housewife
I flippin HATE you! and I mean that in the freakin sweetest way possible.:) .(picture Elaine from Seinfeld pushing Jerry when she was excited) Thats me....I am so JEALOUS of your creativity....and obvious time it took to create this...I actually kinda want to stomp my foot in a mini temper tantrum that I don't get to have this bar. Your son better be careful, the fact that this bar has wheels means it rocks and ROLLS...right outta his house into MINE..:)
ReplyDeleteLove ya Bliss.
FANTASTIC JOB!
Hugs
Karin
Super repurpose Bliss! Love the bar, and you are the coolest mom on the block. :)
ReplyDeletegail
How awesome...this is a piece of art, Bliss...and I'll bet it looks great with those sheers and curtains he bought, too!
ReplyDeleteVery cool!
ReplyDeleteBliss.
ReplyDeleteYou continue to floor me.
Jaw dropping makeovers are apparently a common occurrence at the ranch because you just keep producing them. Your talent creating art out of the ordinary is extraordinary.
Miss Bliss does it again! Wonderful wonderful wonderful! I have a radio cabinet in my garage....maybe now I'll be motivated to fix it up into a bar cabinet, which is what I bought it for. Mine has doors in the front though. And I had to pull out an amazing amount of electronic antiques to get it empty. .... actually mine had a turntable as well. I hope I still have that..... of course mine will NEVER compare to yours!
ReplyDeleteThat is one cool bar and a cool mom too!! It looks great from the front but I love the back shot of it housing the bar essentials! That paint sounds like it works like a charm!
ReplyDeleteThis is completely amazing! Oh my word how I love it!
ReplyDeletei love how this turned out and love that it is so very you!
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome, Bliss! (How funny---my son uses the bar we made from an old radio, too! Must be a "son" thing.) I love the navy and white combo--it's always been one of my favorites.
ReplyDeleteWhat is this drivel about needing to be inspired by others when you can belt out THIS?!
ReplyDeletep.s. YOU inspire me. Now hand it over... haha
Dang girl!! I want this piece, STAT! It's awesome Bliss.
ReplyDeleteI shared this on my facebook and my daughter said, "If you make that for your blog, I'll pay you for it." Now, I'm on the hunt for an old cabinet radio. Not that I would charge her, of course. It's a top 40 hit!
ReplyDeleteHoly Cow that's fun! What a fabulous up-cycle!
ReplyDeleteall of his friends will be lined up to have the "cool" mom paint something for their bachelor pads. that bar is amazing.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely ADORE this piece! It may just be my favorite Bliss transformation of all time.
ReplyDeleteWhat a perfect piece to start his furniture collection with. I see his friends gathering around this bar in admiration. Love that you left part of it with the wood showing through and the chippy lettering is a really nice touch. Rockin' all the way around, Bliss!!
ReplyDeleteLOVE it!
ReplyDeleteYou do amazing work.
OMG! That is so cute! I never would've guessed that it was a bar from the front.
ReplyDeleteWOW ... unbelievable ... you are amazing and so talented. Great job.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Audrey Z. @ Timeless Treasures

I know I've said it before, but you're a freakin' genius. Oh, and I have a wonderful 22-year-old daughter whose boyfriend I'd like to trade in. You interested? I'd love to be related.
ReplyDelete-andi
In my loudest voice, no louder than that, A-MAZ-ING, this cabinet totally rocks (see I've gone all American again). I hope your son appreciates it, and how cool his Mum is.
ReplyDeleteI'm loving Navy at the moment, though I'd like it on a souped up Mini Cooper S. Navy is the new black !!
Crazy amazing, Bliss! You and Donna and Angie should totally form a furniture/decor production company. "Funky Knick of Bliss Junk" haha. Seriously, you are a creative genius :)
ReplyDeleteThat piece is beautiful. Thanks for sharing! Hello from Freedom Fridays!
ReplyDeleteI think you ROCKED this hard core! I love your brain, and the coolness it creates....I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!! Of course I pinned it...
ReplyDeleteYou turn up the talent that's for sure. Love how it turned out. And yes, I do remember that song. Loved it! thanks for sharing with SYC.
ReplyDeletehugs,
Jann
I have upcycling envy! Some how I missed this post so I am so glad you shared on the Be. YOU. tiful Link party. This is too cool! I will never pass one of these radios up again:)
ReplyDeleteThat same radio was in my parents home (1942-1950). We (my brother and I, growing up) listened to The Shadow, Fibber MaGee and Molly, and a other Talk shows, of that era... The music was from after WW2, I remember. Oh boy, the memories to see what goes around, comes around, and now is new in a very different way.Times have changed, haven't they?
