Barn Wood Whale

Today when I downloaded the photos from my camera there were photos I didn't remember taking.

Because I didn't take them.

This is the second time that's happened this month.

My family is learning not only to save free furniture finds in case I can create something, but also when they make a project they are remembering to take photos.

I thank them for doing that because it's not really any work for me.

When I saw an old weathered board in my photo feed, for a moment I contemplated what I ended up making with it.

Then I saw a photo of a drawing, which was good because I was concerned about my memory at that point.

I recognized Moby and I knew I hadn't drawn him because the only thing I can draw is stick people and I don't even draw them very well.

Up next in the photo feed was the shape from the drawing traced onto the wood, and  I knew somewhere lurking in the confines of the garage someone was making a wooden barn board whale.

#2 daughter was creating again.

And she remembered photos.

She's getting better at this blogging thing than I am, her plot to overthrow me must be imminent.

She traced the mammal on the barn board and used a jigsaw to cut it out.

She stained the top part of the whales body dark, and used a screwdriver to gouge out between the top and bottom to give it some depth, then sanded the whole thing by hand.

She wanted a rustic beady eyed sea creature and that is exactly what she got.

I asked her what she was going to do with her whale and she said she didn't know, she just felt like making a whale.

I feel like making lots of things, but I don't do it.  I guess I should have her give me motivation lessons.

  2. You have a very talented daughter ... very nice and I like that she gave it depth by gouging out the bottom. Maybe you need to give her carving tools.

  12. That looks great! Your daughter is so talented. She obviously got your genes. If she added some hooks near the bottom of it, it could be a cute towel rack in a bathroom.

  21. Okay, this gets all kinds of points from keeping the natural tone look, to using a screw driver to define the whale and she's doing great with the photo process too!! She's has a great teacher ;-)
