Upcycled Entertainment Center

Mission:  Find a small-ish console of some kind that is cheap, not too large and doesn't stick out too far.

Who:  #3 kid, #2 son

What:  New wall TV needs a base without taking up precious floor space

When:  ASAP

Where:  Garage sale or thrift shop

Why:  Because mom makes cool stuff

Recall I transformed a radio bar for my son who moved into new digs.

Well he needed something to put electronic gadgets in that didn't take up much space or cost much  - close to free was his budget.

I loaded up this sturdy gem knowing I could give it some new life, as well as blend it in with his random decor.

First, the little doodads running along the bottom were cut off, I just wasn't liking those.

There was also the problem of aiming remotes at electronics hidden behind a wood door, so a couple of the inside wood door panels were sawed off and replaced with wire mesh.

The doors do not have to be open all the time now to turn the TV on and off.

The back of the storage unit was given two routed holes to fish wires out to the plug in.

The base was painted with Maison Blanche Navy inside and out.

I sanded the top as well as distressed the frame, all under the close supervision of ducks.

No one knows sanding techniques better than nosy ducks.

Next was a rub of dark stain over the whole thing to give it a washed worn look.

It was finished up with a coat of dark brown Maison Blanche wax and four round brushed nickle knobs then sent on it's way to live happily ever after with the radio bar and my son.

Cost, $5.00 plus $2.00 at same garage sale for brushed silver knobs.

Mission accomplished.

  16. "not too large and doesn't stick out too far" The first thing I thought of was NOT my butt. That console turned out amazing, even if you did perform a nipple-ectomy on the poor thing. (yep...I would have done the same.)

You are definitely one cool mom. And I'm so glad I got to see the duckens today. I was actually thinking about them when I clicked on your blog! I thought, "Hey...I haven't seen the duckens in a while!" And there they were.

  18. Stop making these uber cool pieces for your son. My daughter has applied to be adopted by you! Beware, she comes with a pile of her own adopted kids and you will be making furniture day and night. Pinning and hoping my daughter doesn't see the pin!

  19. Can I adopt you as my mom Bliss? I guess I have to get in line...you are just too cool! I LOVE it and of course pinned it.

  21. Aaaah, Hi Mom, I'm home...and I can I have one of what he's getting??? Beyond cool, Bliss! I think he's going to keep "needing" a new piece every couple of months or so (and I don't blame him one bit!!)

  22. Great makeover. Leave it to you to come up with a way to be able to have the doors closed and still use the remote. Genius idea. You have one lucky son.

  23. Love that colour, especially combined with the wooden top.
Definitely a good choice to cut the doodads off !

  24. ough we may be very alert and awake in the process of watching a movie, entertainment gives us the illusion of non participation as we don't have the opportunity to get voluntarily involved in the scenario. guarantor loans
