The post about those old window weights? Well those old weights came attached to a whole building.
I purchased an old building to renovate a couple years ago (yup this is my baby, but Brawn does all the work). In it's past life it was a barber shop and we inherited all the paraphernalia with the purchase.
Lots and lots and lots of "stuff" which also included furnishings from the apartment above where the barber and his family lived.

And two of these bad boys
One of which I had the misfortune of being dropped on my big toe.
We even got the scissors, shavers, empty bottles of smelly stuff,
cabinets, racks, and lots of old hair.

A couple years ago when the reno started I barked out the order to Brawn and the boys.....
"don't get rid of anything just in case".
Now with blogging, I'm barking louder....
"DON'T GET RID OF ANYTHING,
NOT A BOLT, NOT A SLAT OF WOOD,
NOTHING!".
Fall of 2011 everyone rolled out of bed, hammers in hand, and off to replace the building front.
We got rid of a whole dumpster load of what? What good stuff did I toss not knowing any better?
I will never know.

That is just too cool!! Seriously. No one has 2 barber chairs. And the sign. And the cash register. Sigh...can we be friends?

ReplyDeleteNow this is very exciting! I would have bought the building just because of the old stuff! I do have to say that I have an old building myself - a theater that was built in 1915 but alas it came with nothing but some stale old popcorn, worn out seats and a mortgage. LOL. We have not done anything with it yet so I will live vicariously through you and your reno and look forward to seeing the after!

This entire building is a gem. A snapshot of a bygone era.
ReplyDelete(Love your term "Dirty Hairy". I have 5 pets, they love to contribute their locks they no longer need to the floor. I should make a little sign that says "Dirty Hairy" for my front door on the days my house qualifies.)

ReplyDeleteYou have a barber shop?!?!! My parents are barbers, and my dad has collected that stuff forever. He has a couple cool old chairs, and tons of the other barberish paraphernalia. If he ever decides to get rid of it, I'll see if we can send it north. :) So cool!
ReplyDeleteI did not start reading blogs or doing a blog until March or so of this year,,,so I never saw this one...and with todays blog...and now WOW...would love to know your dreams and all this great stuff....we have a shoe shine chair in our antique mall location....Elvis got his shoes shine their and many other notables...and a few we rather forget....
