While in college daughter #2 was a nanny for a little girl and wanted to give her an elf like ours - to her a shelf elf looks like our elf. She couldn't find one. So she made one.
She has some mad skills in all areas of art. But she wasn't painting this elf. She wasn't sculpting it out of clay. She wasn't designing it on the computer. No she said "I'm gonna sew one". I thought... 'sure you are honey'. Doesn't she know she is my daughter and my daughters don't know how to sew because their mother doesn't know how to sew?
She said she was going to make a girl elf, only asking me if we had some green thread. Yeah right. Helloooo, we have the basic colors for emergencies, no thread in creative colors. So she took beige. 'Alllllrightttt dear' I mumbled in a disbelieving tone thinking there was no way she could sew an elf.
Her elf was made from an old sock and some fabric scraps. The arms are made from valances from my oldest daughters room. Really not sure where she got the green. She stitched this little elf for a special little girl. She packaged it up, mailed it off with instructions from Santa.
She got word that they love it..... and that behavior has been top notch this December.
I'm sure glad she didn't listen to me when I all but told her she wouldn't be able to sew one.

You were cool before it was cool!! : )
ReplyDeleteBoy, that's better then any elf you will find at Target or Barnes and Noble! What a great job and a great elf!
ReplyDeleteAdorable. I like both of your elves better than the one everyone is going crazy about. To me that one looks a little creepy.
ReplyDeleteShe made a great elf! I didn't know about the elf on a shelf when my kids were little and now it is too late! It sure does look fun though!
ReplyDeleteBoth of your elves are adorable! You daughter does have mad skills..now in sewing too. I love the sweet little feminine one she made. I can't believe you didn't get the memo about leaving your Shelf Elf in hilarious situations every night/morning...really..what were you busy with 6 kids or something?
ReplyDeleteHow cute and I didn't get that memo either.
ReplyDeleteBoth of those elves are darling! The one your daughter, who can't sew, made is so darn cute! She should make a line of those. The would fly off the shelves! Tell her I'll put my order in for the first one and she's got all year to make it!
ReplyDeleteJust returned from a quick trip to Arizona where my daughter had none other than the shelf elf who kept showing up in fun places to watch the grandkids. I had not as yet heard of him (her)but soon saw the story. Blissly....you and your cute daughter are way ahead of the times. Both elves are adorable and I know they are surely doing their job well. (smile). Sorry I've been away so so long...hopefully I can get back to blogland soon and start catching up! Love ya girlfriend and wishing you and your family much holiday joy!

Adorable elves!!! Your daughter did a fantastic job with hers!!! Years ago some friends and I got together to make some elves. We each made 22. Can you imagine the production line we had going? I never thought to sit them around in different places each day however mine aren't very posable (is that even a word?) due to their stuffing. I do remember when I was little though my Mom having an elf on the shelf. His name was Winkie. We were told Winkie would be watching and report back to Santa about our behavior. If all was good, sometime on Christmas Eve a small wrapped gift was left to each of us and was left at the front/back door. It was always exciting to get that gift. I've carried on the Winkie tradition with my kids (now grown).
ReplyDeleteOurs isn't really able to pose either, he's like a wet noodle!

Wow! I need a cool Shelf Elf like that.
ReplyDeleteI'm a bummer of a mom, we don't have an elf. Instead, I pose around the house in funny and silly positions keeping my eye on kiddo for Santa.
Great job... that artist of yours!

Totally awesome! It is just adorable...love the long limbs. Good thing you didn't stop her. My daughter did something similar when she was 9, glad I didn't tell her she couldn't do it...because she did! And did it well. Aren't kids remarkable?
ReplyDeleteI'm glad your daughter explored her creative side. Her shelf elf is perfect and adorable.
ReplyDeleteLove the idea of your own handmade elf! Wish I had sewing skilz! LOL
ReplyDeleteLove your elves! DD#2 did a fabulous job... what a sweetheart! So glad your elf didn't go the way of the wagon... :)
ReplyDeleteI'm not in on the whole shelf elf thing at all. I know we had one of those elves when I was a kid, but it just sat in one spot until after the holidays when it got packed away. I had no idea this elf was supposed to move around! Your daughter did great with her elf! I'm sure it'll be a cherished possession for years to come.
ReplyDeleteLove the Whimsy of a Elf,a little item that puts a smile on your face...thanks for the taking care of her over the years
ReplyDeleteLove your elves! We have one...the grandkids love his trouble-making ways...
ReplyDeleteummm...that first elf. well, it leonard nimoy. that's why he wasn't up to all the mischief. it's only logical.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute story ... love the elf your daughter made.
ReplyDeleteChristmas Blessings.

Your daughter's hand crafted elf looks like dolls crafted generations ago by mothers and grandmothers using only what they had on hand. It is one of a kind and adorable!! The hand stitching makes it even more charming. :@
ReplyDeleteOne time you are glad she didn't listen to you! I love it and I love that you have the original :) You were so ahead of your time! Hugs
ReplyDeleteWould you believe I had never heard of the Elf until last year? My daughters have all reached adulthood without experiencing the mischief. My maternal awesomeness has now been proven fraudulent. Thanks a lot.
ReplyDeleteOur elf really didn't do much but sit around, my oldest kids survived too, they just created their own mischief.

Love this! It's like the prequel to the Elf on a Shelf.....the untold story! Your elves are so cute!
ReplyDeleteHave a Merry, Merry Christmas my wonderful friend!

Totally ahead of your time, Bliss! And what a sweet and creative gift from your daughter... I'm impressed!

So much cuter than those modern-day elves-on-shelves of today! She needs a DIY blog, Bliss. (BTW, still laughing about your comment on Heidi's blog today. I'm thinking a "hey girl" post full of Andy pics might be in order.)
