They're vintage knobs from an old pump organ I believe, possibly Victorian.
At least that's what Google tells me.
While visiting my friend Laurel's blog, Chipping With Charm, she had put together a mini wine bar. I spied her wine stopper, and since she and I are both known to shop at the occasional sales in Buffalo Minnesota where I picked my knobs up at, I thought Laurel may have bought some as well and turned one into a wine stopper, she's brilliant like that.
Turns out she didn't, but that's where I got the idea from, and decided to turn mine into wine stoppers.
It couldn't of been easier. In fact it took me longer to find corks in a drawer and write this post than the actual project.
The knobs already had screws in them - convenient huh - and I already had corks. However I was short a few bottles of wine and had to make due with empty wine carafe's to test the stoppers out.
They fit together so well, it's as if the vintage knobs were made to be wine bottle stoppers.
I know for a fact that when I play any musical instrument people run for their wine bottles.
And when I sing.... they run, and don't stop till I do!

ReplyDeletegail
Such a super cool idea!
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love these! Aren't you the clever girl?
ReplyDeleteSo awesome!!! I just used some organ pull stops as drawer pulls on a wash stand I just redid! I never would have thought to use them for wine stoppers!!!
ReplyDeleteOh I love these! I need a bowl of those organ thingies.
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna go all american on ya - they're awesome Mrs. B.
ReplyDeleteOH these are pretty, Bliss...such a wonderful idea! I love the graphic quality of the knobs!
ReplyDeleteBliss, I love the idea…..but have a concern….how long will the knob stay in the cork? Usually, the corks is so tight and hard to get back in the bottle I use a commercial synthetic material 'cork' if there's anything left in the bottle after a wild night of sipping(LOL).
ReplyDeleteI can imagine putting a real cork with a knob in the bottle and then having the cork left behind when i pull on the knob to finish off the dregs. (I know, I delve too deeply into issues…!!!)
If the knob is attached with just the screw, will the cork give way after a short time. Or, if you have tried these on something besides empty carafes, can you give us an idea of how long they last? Should they be glued in, do you think?
I think I'll find some knobs and have a go at this, since the idea is genius and they would look good even if simply as accents on the classy bar I intend to have when I find the right piece of old furniture. Too little furniture,,,,too many wants…..(sigh).
Happy spring!
Well.... I didn't glue them in so I could remove them if I want to make something else from them. Some of the corks I used are the plastic synthetic kind, but both kinds seem to have taken to the screw good, fit tight. I guess if I have a wild night of sipping and the cork goes bad I'll use a new cork, and a little cork in the bottle never stopped me from finishing the wine, good to the last drop. Mostly they are to look at not necessarily heavy use. So far anyway!
Delete"…a wild night of slipping…."!!! In my world that means no corks used at all! LOL
DeleteBut I do hate to break the cork loose when it's snuggly fitting the top of the bottle.
But I get, the …to look at…part. Works for me! Cheers…..
Now I'm thirsty and want to here the POP of a cork!
DeleteWow! I love these! I would never have known what they were, nor would I have known what to do with them. Leave it to you to figure all of that out!
ReplyDeletelove these knobs…I love and have used knobs on bottles …love the look they just add so much more...
ReplyDeleteLove that this is a fast and easy project. They look very pretty. I'd put them in a bowl too. They're so interesting.
ReplyDeleteClever idea Bliss and so pretty ... just for display if nothing else. My daughter had an old organ ... wonder if she still has it? This does inspire me for something else. Thanks.

Those are beautiful Bliss. I did this a few years ago. Here is one of my posts on wine stoppers.
ReplyDeletehttp://alapinlife.blogspot.com/2011/11/make-pretty-cork-wine-stoppers-tutorial.html
I've made all different kinds of wine stoppers and sold a few hundred.
Awesome idea!!! They're really beautiful!~~Angela
ReplyDeleteDang, those are gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI'm tune-challenged too. My kids were never lulled to sleep with a lullaby. And now they just make fun of me on the rare occasion that I try to hum a tune ...
ReplyDeleteLove those wine toppers!

This is a brilliant idea and so cute! I love the text on the organ knobs and the color! They make perfect stoppers for wine! Hugs, Leena
ReplyDeleteBoy when you create you are a genius! I love these, they are gorgeous! While I am known to hit the bottle on occasion... I don't sing either LOL
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I'd love them as drawer knobs, too!
ReplyDeleteSuch a great idea! I love how easy that project is and how unique they are. Those would make a cute gift to go along with a bottle of wine too.
ReplyDeleteI covet your knob stoppers.
ReplyDeleteThese are practically.... perfection!
ReplyDeleteJoining two wonderful worlds: wine and antiques.
Those vintage organ knobs are the cats pajamas of cool already, now you've gone and found a new use for them which makes it...a party of cool cats in pajamas, what could be cooler?
ReplyDeleteThose are soooo cool Bliss. What a neat idea.
ReplyDeleteThese are great! I don't generally cork my wine because I will drink an entire bottle at one sitting, given that I teach high schoolers who can't read, but if I needed a cork? These would be my first choice.
ReplyDeletelol You are too funny, Bliss. Thanks for my chuckle for the day. And where do you find these sort of things? Ok, Buffalo Minnesota...but you must have an eye to find these. They do look like they were made to be stoppers.
ReplyDeleteDebbie :)
LOVE them!! So cool...yep, I might need some too :)
ReplyDeleteIn case anyone reads this.....it's possible I'm nuts...but this is a test, it is only a test.
