Made in the dark of night like most of the end of the year gifts created here, and right down to the wire with time.
Photos were almost an after thought for December projects.
Telling you both those things - working in the dark & photos as an afterthought - is basically setting up the excuse if project photos suck for the next month.
You know, it takes what..... an extra 10 seconds to grab the camera and take a picture?
Well some nights I felt like I just didn't have those extra 10 seconds.
To save my back I would sit down on my short little painting chair after the sun set, and get to work.
The last thing I had on my mind was staging any photos when the project was finally done.
This project was wrapped right in place, not very well, on Christmas Eve in about the same spot I painted it!
In December I received some complimentary paint products to try from the line of Fusion Mineral Based Furniture Paints.
Fusion Mineral Based paints are relatively new on the market. They are self-leveling, require minimal prep, no finishing coat, waxing or on-going maintenance - you can read about them {here}.
In addition to a palette of neutral colors, the box included brush cleaner, a brush and trowel, metallic gilding pastes, sand stone medium, transfer gel and pearl embossing paste.
A certain 7 year old is a Lego aficionado, and my goal was to re-purpose something that could store his collection, give him room to build and display, all within the boundary of size and the aesthetics of an item that was visually like a piece of furniture.
I paired Lamp White Fusion paint with another product I wanted to try, Java Gel stain from General Finishes.
First Brawn had to alter the nightstand a bit. He added hinges and created drop down sides next to the original top.
For those times when Lego building projects have been filed away, the top wings can drop down and the table will take up a little less space.
Our choice for the drawers was whatever was going to be quick and simple, using what we had on hand to get this done in time for the 25th.
A hole cutter drill bit (my name for it since I have no idea what it's really called) was used to bore out some pieces of pine and they were screwed on to the drawer from the back.
That kind of drill bit, what ever it is, leaves a center hole so those were filled with some Rock Hard putty and sanded smooth.
The nightstand was picked up as a set for $5.00. That was $5.00 for both, not each.
The first one was turned into a pink play kitchen that you can see {here}.
If you have a Lego builder in your house, then you know there is a Lego Movie.
In the movie, the little Lego people work at Master Builders Incorporated.
I didn't like the scroll/vine part on the nightstand, so we cut a thin piece of luan and I painted it with the movie reference.
Flat building bases also fit on the top of the table so the creations don't slide around. And depending on where it will be located, we considered adding some wheels to the bottom as well.
But like I said, it was Christmas Eve for gosh sakes, and this wasn't the only last minute project that had to be wrapped!

I want to be inside your brain...just for a day...honestly. You come up with the coolest projects. LOVE this Lego table...Christmas eve is perfect timing in my book!~ xo
ReplyDeleteDown to the wire but you nailed it! So creative and I'm sure it will save the parent's of that 7 year old from some painful Lego stomps. The worst!
ReplyDeleteEverything Is Awesome.
ReplyDeleteand yes, I sang it. :)
I wish we'd had one of these about 20 years ago. Stepping on Legos brings out the colorful language. I love this, Bliss! (But the mudpie station is still number one in my heart. Please reassure it for me.)
ReplyDeleteOh my word, I bet that little Lego builder was BESIDE himself! Fantastic project, Bliss -- last minute and all. Happy New Year, friend!

I love it Bliss! The Golden Child has been wanting some sort of Lego table and this, with it's fold out sides is perfect! You are the best Gramma ever!
ReplyDeleteYou're a dream grandma. And a pretty damn good mama too!
ReplyDeletePhee nom enal.
ReplyDeleteLove it Bliss! I love java gel and I must try the fusion :) You really know how to find a bargain! $5 for 2 no way!

Love the project and can't believe the price! The magic of Christmas is the great surprises Even if it is a last minute one. Those are usually the best ones. Happy New Year!

Up to your good work again ... such a thoughtful gift.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year.

It's bad enough that my daughter wants to be adopted by you, but now my grandkids will want you for their grandma as well! The hinged top is brilliant. I'm peering at it and wondering if I can do it without screwing it up. Well done! I'm making myself feel better by saying your pictures do suck.
ReplyDeleteLegos! We have a huge container of 20 years worth. I love this idea and you do rock as a grandma! Happy New Year friend!
ReplyDeleteSo super cute! What a great way to corral those little Lego pieces that always seem to be underfoot (and when they are underfoot it's quite painful!).
ReplyDelete:) Linda
I would have loved to have seen that certain 7 year old open his present, what a fantastic gift and beautifully executed as always.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, Bliss - this is adorable! I wish I would have made something this awesome when my Lego-obsessed son was little. He's 20 now, so I'm not sure he would want one, but I saved his huge plastic tote full of Legos for his future kids, so maybe I'll make one for them!!
ReplyDeleteYou are the queen of cleverness! Great idea.
ReplyDeleteBet you had one happy Lego-oligist on Christmas morning. Very clever with the hole drilling thingamajig and the drop down top to create more table top space. Very clever that you have a painting chair, too. We need a post on that, although Ibuprofen might not want to hear about it! Pinned
ReplyDeleteI love it Bliss! I love the Fusion paint I received and I love your Lego project (so would my PreK class!)
ReplyDeleteLego tables are usually a bit gaudy, only because they're usualy in lego colours but I love this, super classy but still fun and not in your face.
ReplyDeleteI've said it before, and I'll say it again. You are a dang genius, genius.
