Laundry Room Utility Panel Cover

I've been working on a laundry room, all the live long day.

At least that's what it must seem like to #1 daughter who has been waiting since Christmas of 2013 for a laundry room makeover we gifted her with.

One of the dynamic duo of Bliss and Brawn sort of dropped the ball on this, and I'll take the blame when it's me but for once I'm in the clear, (unlike our dining room chairs that took over a year - that was totally me).

Anyhow, while #1 daughter and her husband were working on their tans in Jamaica last week, operation get-that-freaking-laundry-room-done, was at least started.

First we converted her prune crate into four prune crates, because you know - if you eat four crates of prunes something is ending up in the laundry room.

The far corner of the room had a gaping hole where the utility panel lives.

Not really attractive, but the electrical panel is easy to get at.

Phase one of hiding that hole is complete.

Phase two adds a rod on the panel for hanging clothes.  Hope that doesn't take another year.

We took some old pieces of junk we had laying around, whipped up a cover, and sent it to hang in her laundry room.

Here it is at concept stage, complete with dust.

An old cabinet front, and two old shutters were set inside a simple frame, along with a couple pieces of scrap wood to fill the gaps, and then the empty center part was filled in with some thin wood.

The concoction was scrubbed and left to dry.

I made little WASH letters on a cedar slat cut into four pieces for that center part.

I used FUSION Mineral based Furniture paint in Lamp White and just sort of slapped the paint on the cedar slats.

The edges were left peeking out so they looked rustic.

Then a letter was stenciled on each piece.

There is no need to wax Fusion paint for protection, however I like to use dark wax for the look, so I waxed the whole project.

I dipped into my stash of old clothes pins and they were nailed on to that center part which was also painted with FUSION paint, in Algonquin.

I had to find some green paint in the garage to rub over the green shutter because I couldn't scrape off the long white drips that came with it.

The panel cover was hung in a French cleat style so it can just be lifted off.

Two little blocks of wood on each side in the opening.....

and two little blocks of wood directly on the cover that slip over each other to hold it in place.

Gaping hole covered, and notice on the right side - in focus - some shelves slightly in view.

I didn't find out till I loaded the photos that I didn't take a decent one of the cover.

No worries mon, I can take another one since I'll probably get back to their laundry room to work on it even if they aren't heading off to Jamaica.

Daughter and her husband arrived home to find their kitty well fed and their laundry room sporting a couple new things.

Thank you to Aunt Jennylyn from FUSION for supplying me with the paint.

No she's not really my aunt, but it feels like Christmas when a package from her arrives.
