Well that happens to be the case of this dresser.
When the brother of my daughters friend bought a house, her friend moved into the old place.
And I can see why the brother left this beauty of a dresser.
Yup, has to be the ugliest dresser I've ever had the pleasure to redo.
My daughter asked if I wanted a challenge.
When I saw the dresser I knew I couldn't make it look any worse!
Brawn discovered the fronts were plastic and he said he could pop them off. "GO FOR IT" was my reply.
I was left with flat fronts and holes where the plastic was attached.
I sort of liked the plastic spindle looking side things on the front, so I left those on.
The whole dresser reminded me of something I might find in a seedy old motel.
Not that I've ever been to a seedy old motel.
My intention for this redo was for it to be a quick in and back out the door type thing.
I didn't care what it looked like in the end as long as it was better.
I didn't want to spend the time to make nice vinyl letters either, so I just used quick alphabet stencils from the lumber yard that I already had.
My daughter requested any shade of gray, so the whole dresser received Fusion Mineral Furniture Paint in Sterling, then I brushed on some metallic silver paint everywhere except the drawer fronts to give it some contrast.
Since this dresser wasn't going to live at my house I wanted it to be of the no cost variety, so I certainly had no intention of buying new hardware to put on the beast.
A little flat black spray paint and the original handles were just fine as far as this free dresser was concerned.
The dresser might not be a masterpiece, but it's better than it was.
I didn't have to spend any money and it took very little of my time to complete it.
And the holes? I glued in black Dollar Store thumb tacks.

ReplyDeleteGreat job!! and like Cassie, I was thinking Bates Motel when I first saw the photo! lol I love that you took this overly ornate piece and made it look cute.
ReplyDeleteYou do amazing things with items I don't know if I would even tackle.

A new life for a piece that could have been landfill. Looks great and awesome for a paint only project.
ReplyDeleteonly you...only you.. rock star I tell ya.
ReplyDeleteI would have left the plastic! I love how good it looks painted.... hehehehe

I agree ... better than it was ... much better. Does not look heavy and bulky anymore and looks pretty good to me. The stenciled lettering is fitting to the style too. Glad you left the plastic "spindles" on the sides. And again ... another great job Bliss.
ReplyDeleteWow, what a cool makeover!

Genius on filling the holes with black tacks! I like the spindly side thingies too. It looks SO much better!
ReplyDeleteI like to call those dressers BIG BERTHA dressers! I have 2 of them in my garage right now that my SIL gave me and she keeps asking if I have done them yet...UGH..I too plan on pulling of the fronts but man this is way cool. Thanks for the inspiration. This my be the motivation to finally get around to Big Bertha 1 and Big Bertha 2 :)

Karin
I would never have thought you could just pull that plastic off! Reminds me of the tall dresser we bought at Levitz in 1972, as newlyweds. What a transformation...and the black tacks idea...so smart. You always inspire me to look at pieces in new ways, Bliss!
ReplyDeleteFree, easy, and the dollar store thumbtack solution is sheer genius, my friend!

You certainly made it look a heck of a lot better! Great job and I love how the design came about - your vision of it coming from an old motel gave it a cut and fun look :) The thumbtacks on over the holes was a perfect solution and great addition too!
ReplyDeleteShe did it again... Oh baby baby!!! Love this transformation!
ReplyDeleteI think the dresser looks a hundred times better and thanks to Brawn for cluing me into the drawer detailing being removable!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe that companies made furniture like that. And I can't believe that people actually paint that stuff with the plastic fronts on it! How do you think of these things? Seedy motel furniture?
ReplyDeleteI remember dressers like that. You did an amazing job and I actually liked the look of the holes! Great idea to use the tacks. The stencils are perfect!
ReplyDeletehugs,
Jann
It's definitely a big improvement over what it was! I like how you gave it personality with the words. You saved it from the trash pile!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun redo! I love that it was of the "no cost variety". Those are the best :)
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing transformation, Bliss. You really took that ugly duckling and turned it into a one of a kind fabulouso creation!
