Fresh Cut Flower Wreath, 29 Bloggers Fall Ideas Tour

Is it getting Fall-sie where you live?

Do you bring the outdoor colors inside?

At my place there are crisp nights, apples galore, and tons of Autumn decorating inspiration from the group of bloggers in this tour of ideas.

This is an annual tour for five days with 28 other bloggers, and I'm excited to be part of it.  There are links at the bottom so you can come along on the tour with me and see what each day of the week holds in store.

You might be stopping in as one of my readers, or you might be checking Bliss Ranch out from the links at the other participating blogs.  Which ever it is I'm happy you're here!

At the ranch lately it's been all about dahlias as I am a proud first time flower gardener.

Since I have a bounty of the blooms I wanted to find a way to incorporate fresh flowers into a door decoration so that every time someone walks through the door they can enjoy the beautiful flowers I have been cutting.

I don't know if a wreath has to be round to be called a wreath, but I'm calling this a wreath anyway, even if it's square.

This wreath is made with fresh flowers.  As in- just a few steps away from the actual cutting off the stem- fresh.

Not dried flowers, not artificial flowers, real live flowers, cut as needed (about once every 1-2 weeks) from my very own dahlia flower garden. There will be links below if you want to find out how this little garden came to be.

I usually change the mudroom door decor with the seasons, and since that's the door that gets used most of the time, it made sense to put the flowers where people could enjoy them going in and out regularly.

I rounded up some pallet scraps, literally the stuff that should have been in the burn pile.  I sanded them up and bit, and cut off some of the ends and these will become the background for the wreath.

Looking at that picture it's hard to believe that splintered pile of pallet pieces is going to be turned into anything!

The pallet wood scraps were nailed onto the back of that really crappy piece of square  wood and it will provide a nice flat back that will lean flush against the door so it doesn't wobbly and splatter.

A cabinet in my kitchen holds a tin collection, some antique or vintage, some not, so I found one that I wouldn't mind putting a nail or two through.

I didn't use the lid, and the can itself was nailed right to the wood.  I did rub some Howards Restore-a-Finish over the wood to bring out the natural tones of each piece.

Inside the sugar tin is a galvanized can that was collecting dust in my cedar porch, and happened to be the perfect size to fit inside the sugar tin.  It will hold the water for the fresh flowers as well as keep the dahlia stems close together so they don't move around each time the door is closed.

When I need to change the water and/or the flowers, all I have to do is lift that center can out and the rest of the wreath stays in place.

I stenciled the wood with words you would find on pallets from stencils you will find at Old Sign Stencils.  You can get your own pallet stencils as well as Autumn sayings at via my link and you can stencil up all your old wood too!

You might notice different dahlias in some of the photos.  I took additional photos when I changed out some of the flowers that were getting old and dropping petals right before posting.

The first batch had more reds and oranges, the next wave of blooms that showed up in the garden had a lot of purples.

If you come to my house and use the mudroom entry, which most everyone does unless they drive a big brown truck and are dropping a large box off, this fresh flower wreath will greet you, and you will exclaim  "are those real flowers?".

Why yes, yes they are.

The dahlias will bloom till a hard frost, so I hope to have a fresh flower wreath on my door through most of October.

And since it's getting Fall-ish now, I can tuck in some wild grasses that are changing color too.

The wreath is hung with a very sophisticated and fancy set up....

Yup those are the pop tops from soda cans.  They work great in a pinch to hang picture frames too.  The tops are stapled right to the wood.

When I hang light weight wreaths on this door I just use fishing line which works great because you can't see it.

This wreath was a little heavier so I threaded a couple zip ties behind the window grid and through the pop can tops.  Tightened up it holds the whole thing from slapping around - not one drop of water spills out and no flowers go flying.

That is unless you tried at first to use the buckle from an old belt and fishing line.  Then the whole shebang would crash to the ground, dump water everywhere, bend your flower stems and knock your pallet wood off the backing so you would basically have to start all over.

Not that it happened to me of course.

 Pin Me....

I'm pretty happy with this door wreath, might just be a favorite that I have made.  It spreads the dahlia love around other than just in a vase inside the house, of which I currently have three of.

There is a nice crop of blooming flowers to bring along wherever I go and deliver them to friends.  The first person I'd bring them too lives 2000 miles away, so she's just gonna have to enjoy this virtual wreath made with flowers from her husbands family farm. Thanks for hooking me up Jojo.
