And sometimes the road where it leads to is to a road you should not have taken?
Well that's what happened on the road to window box FAIL.
Toward the end of last summer I got a wild hair to give my window boxes a makeover.
They just needed some fresh paint, but on that particular day I was feeling crafty.
Or so I thought. Unfortunately none of my crafty bones were working that day.
I have 8 of these window boxes and since they needed to be painted anyway I figured I had nothing to lose.
Stripes, yeah I'll go with stripes.
Sure, I'll do simple stripes and be done. Easier than painting the whole thing right?
Well one box was all I needed to see, to know the idea sucked.
Could I have done a worse job?
Let me answer that for you......
Yes I could...........
I could then decide maybe a basket weave look would help.
Wrong.
How ugly and sloppy is that?
How is it possible that from far away it looks even worse than this closeup?
So this one window box stayed that way till Winter passed and I figured I'd deal with it then.
"Then" has arrived - it's Spring, or is it Summer? Doesn't matter really because all 8 of the window boxes came down this week.
And this is where the "you know how one thing leads to another thing" comes in.
I decided they needed to be taken down because they are a bit shallow for plants to do really well. Down they could be enlarged to a better depth.
But once they were down it was discovered that the wood behind them was rotting.
And now you know what? I don't feel like putting the window boxes back up.
I decided once it's finished being painted I'm going to hang plants along there instead.
I should save a little money too. Those of you with window boxes do the math for how many plants you need for each box if you want them to be really full and lush, then multiply it by 8.

Oh wow, now that would really tick me off. Yes, the expense of the flowers to start with, but all that trckle down work and expense to boot. I'm about ready to throw in the towel anyway, given my bout with poison ivy and feeling chained to watering almost daily. I feel like it's a losing battle.:/

ReplyDeleteyou win some, you lose some! bummer it didn't work out! but i like the pretty wood and it will look great without boxes.
ReplyDeleteThat is totally your prerogative to not put them back up! It is annoying when a project flops but knowing you, it'll spark you to do another one!
ReplyDeleteGood thing you found the rotting wood problem when you did before it got out of control...yes, I'm a glass half-full kind of girl.
ReplyDeleteOh no! At least you noticed before the wood got too damaged. I'm sure you will find another way to add colourful plants. We kept our pots simple this year mostly because of a smaller budget than usual but they still look pretty.
ReplyDeleteYikes! Dealing with rotten wood is no fun! But I have no doubt that something will pop into that crazy brain of yours. (Not crazy like "needs to go to the state-supported hospital' crazy. Just the 'two wild and crazy guys' crazy.)
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with the expense thing! I have 5 hayracks lined with coco liner and place 8 plants in each one...40 plants just for those guys! Looks gorgeous...I get tons of compliments...but, every year I think "not this year" cause of the expense involved. Somehow they still get planted each year...
ReplyDeleteWell I call that a success - not a fail! I put up a box on my front bay window a few years ago. It has been a big fail for me. I'm too cheap to keep it planted. Maybe I should get some ivy that is hard to destroy?
ReplyDeleteGood thing you caught on to what was lurking behind those boxes. The whole space will be gorgeous once you finish with it. OK, now I want to know what you did with those window boxes.
ReplyDeleteoh man...i hate when that happens!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh you had me laughing with this one...I thought if you just keep on painting those stripes, you'll end up with white windowboxes! Too bad about the rot...that is always a pain...
