Bakery Gift Sign With Funky Junk Old Sign Stencils

Depending on the specific occasion, we enjoy making gifts around here.

And as far as we can tell, the recipients like receiving them.

You know the saying about the apple doesn't fall far from the tree right?

Well there is also another saying..... whatever sprinkles your donuts.

When one of my daughters had a housewarming and "Friendsgiving" meal to attend for a college friend over the weekend, she of course wanted to make a gift.

Apparently the friend has a thing for donuts, and my daughter was going to hand paint a whole sign, but she had limited time to get it done, because we also tend to procrastinate around here.

Funky Junk Old Sign Stencils to the rescue!

The process of stenciling signs that make great gifts really couldn't be easier.

Now I must confess... there is a whole right way and a wrong way to actually do the stenciling.

If you want the whole right way, you should probably seek out a stenciling tutorial from someone other than me, that way I'm not responsible if you make a mistake using my method.

Mine is the lazy girls guide to stenciling.

In a nutshell, you decide on the size background you want, if you will paint a new-ish board, or use an old piece of barn wood, the colors you want, and then have at it.

For this sign a piece of smooth MDF was used, and the background was painted with Fusion Mineral Paints in Algonquin, and the letters were done in Fusion Coal.

You line up the stencil with the registration marks, or ummmm, eyeball it like we do, and tape it down nice and tight so it doesn't slide around, or ummmm, maybe use a couple pieces of tape and hold the rest in place with your hand and hope for the best like we do.

The one thing you must do is get most of the paint back off of your stencil brush or the paint will get under the stencil as you dab and use a circular motion with the brush.

We slightly dip the brush in the paint, then use a Chinet paper plate to dab most of it all back off, also using a circular motion. 

Daughter wanted to add in a hand painted line about donuts to make it more personal for her donut loving friend, so she simply realigned the part of the stencil that says 'open' and moved it toward the bottom leaving room between for her hand painted lettering.

She added some hand painted flourishes in the corners, a bit of highlighting with the paint brush along the edges and some white on the letters.

There was no heavy distressing in her vision, so she only lightly sanded the sign and then gave it a coat of wax, to end up with a nice gift for her friend made by her own hands.

And I ate the donut.
