This week I have an old metal file cabinet that has a door and not just drawers.
Originally I posted this on Gails blog, My Repurposed Life.
I picked up this heavy old file thing at a garage sale for $5 bucks. Of course I needed it like I needed a hole in the head, but come on... it was only five buckeroos!
I had my husband alter the door with a wood frame and some wire so I could clip photos to it. I wanted a wood top too, so I asked him to just nail on whatever wood he had in the garage.
The instruction I gave him was that it didn't have to be pretty.
This was never intended to be a show piece, just something functional, so I didn't want him or me to spend a great amount of time on it only to put it in the closet when it was done.
A couple cans of brown spray paint, and a little ASCP old white on the top along with dark wax, and it was done.
My daughter needed storage for beads. She makes custom cake testers and it's easier to spread out her supplies on the dining room table.... {and leave them there}. So we filled up the cabinet with her goods and tucked it in an unused corner of a seldom used room, with easy access to the dining room table of course!
Not sure why the light makes the paint job look blotchy. Hmmm? In person it's just a dark chocolate brown cabinet.
Oh well - her beads are off the table, at least till her next orders come in.

I love it...so clever!!
ReplyDeletecan you email me a pick of the inside of the door? I need to build two of them and I'm not sure how to connect the pieces.
ReplyDeleteIt looks fabulous!
that is so cool! love the new look- it is very bliss!
ReplyDeleteYou've got the touch, B.
ReplyDeleteIt looks amazing!
ReplyDeleteYou always come up with the most creative pieces of furniture! This one is really unique. Glad you were able to give your daughter some extra storage space for her bead crafts.
ReplyDeleteWay to make a plain old piece look fun and alive again!
ReplyDeleteThis is really cool! We did something similar with a small wheeled file cabinet and a piece of butcher block to make a rolling cart for Lib's kitchen.
ReplyDeleteLooks great! Love the mix of wood with metal :)
ReplyDeleteIt's so very Bliss! Love it. And it looks way too good to be stuffed in a closet. Or hidden in a corner!
ReplyDelete:)
Yer a genius. A genius, I say.
ReplyDeleteGreat repurposing! I can't help but think of Full Metal Jacket when I read, "Old Metal Cabinet". Is it just me?
ReplyDeleteNice. Storage, storage, storage . . . one can never get enough!
ReplyDeleteI've not seen it before, I must have been on a sabbatical from blogging.
ReplyDeleteI can't quite get to grips with 'seldom used room'. You actually have spare rooms where nothing goes on much. How about a craft room for you and your daughter !
Btw, great makeover.
You make the coolest stuff! Seriously...I need your brain! I'd love this cabinet in a bathroom! Or my studio....
ReplyDeleteLove, love. It's been such a busy two months - I really need to get off my hiney now and get to some garage sales, stat. Because, um... my craft supplies are still strewn everywhere. Pinned!
ReplyDeleteNice transformation on the file cabinet. You're giving me an idea here. Anything but ordinary is my motto.

I love the frame & wire to hold pictures, what a great idea! I've never actually seen a filing cabinet like this, it is really cool.
ReplyDeleteDebbie :)
Oooh I like this! Did Brawn use sheet metal screws to attach the wood to the cabinet door?
ReplyDeleteLove the cabinet. That wire front gives me some ideas for the lockers I have stashed away in the garage...
ReplyDeleteI remember this from the first time round and I still want one just like it! Of course I would have pretty beads to put in it, but I'd manage nontheless.
ReplyDeleteDid you have a reading of its past life?? That thing is so cool. Almost as cool as you.
