Spool Patio Table

When Brawn is left on his own, I never know what he's going to come up with.

On the to-do list last year was to make some sort of a patio table.

We've had glass ones that shattered, and metal ones that rust. 

The latest wood one was suppose to be temporary and we used it for what seemed like forever - long enough anyway for the cheap wood to rot before our eyes and it was stained twice, and painted at least twice.  I guess we got our monies worth out of it.

But a patio table becomes a pricey piece of furniture to keep replacing over the years and I've yet to meet outdoor stuff that can take what a cold Minnesota winter can dish out.

Or dump on as the case may be.

Other people probably store their treasured patio furniture inside, but not us wazy bwastards.

Yes I sound like Elmer Fudd when I swear on my blog.

There is a place located right here in Minnesota where they make furniture from recycled plastics.  

I like the $1600 table, and I don't need chairs, which is good because at that price it doesn't come with any.

That table is not in the budget this summer.  Or probably ever.

Brawn, feeling the pressure at the start of BBQ season to provide a place for us to set our paper plates and hot dog buns, decided to just make a table to use for however long it might last, or you know, till a nice table is in the budget.

I thought he would make some sort of a traditional rectangle looking table, or maybe even a picnic style table which we have had before.

Not possible for him to make something typical.  Traditional isn't used much in his vocabulary.

We have these spools that our son in law brought us.  Free. 

So of course if it's free that's Brawns go-to raw product.  Hence why a really nice table will never be in the budget - really nice tables are not free.

I heard saws going but was busy with my own projects and when I walked into the garage, there leaning against the piano was this big tri-spool-atops...... (get it?  3 spool tops, like the dino - triceratops?  Lame Bliss).

Brawn had taken apart the spools, sawed and pieced them together like a puzzle.

Weird, but I kinda like this quirky thing.  Surely no one else on the block has one like it.

He pounded in nails, sanded, and dug around back by the shed for old posts for the legs.

3 legs.  It's a 3-legged tri-spool a top table.

Then we made a run to the lumber yard where he had me pick out 4 little cans of different color stain.

A mahogany, weathered gray, red something, and a walnut.

Then he did this;

Then varnish, varnish and more varnish.

The angle is weird in the photo above, I was hanging out a window and it makes the table look short, like a mini, but six chairs fit around it and I promise it is of standard table height.

The legs need to be cleaned off and stained yet - sanded down so they will take stain - but at springs' first weekend BBQ at least I had a place to set my buns.
